Who wants Gillibrand’s former seat? Updated: 01/23/2009 06:59 PM By: Ken Jubie

CAPITAL REGION, N.Y. -- Now that it’s official, Gillibrand’s seat in congress is up for grabs and there are already plenty of politicians prepared to reach for it.

“And I think we need an upstate leader, somebody that knows the economy is suffering, somebody that knows we’re losing jobs, who knows what property taxes are in New York State,” said Jim Tedisco, currently the Assembly Minority Leader.

His former colleague in the Assembly and newly minted State Senator from Wilton, Roy McDonald, doesn’t want the job, saying he’s content in the state senate. But North Country representative, State Senator Betty Little has the itch for a change in scenery. She says she hopes voters will give her the change to represent them in Washington.

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate John Faso has the same hope.

“I bring incredible experience in government. I’ve run statewide. I ran against Elliot Spitzer. In fact, I’ve warned people about Elliot Spitzer, that he wasn’t what he was made out to be,” said Faso. Who wants Gillibrand’s former seat? With Gillibrand leaving the 20th Congressional District, the race to fill the seat is already on. Governor Paterson will soon announce a time frame for the special election. Ken Jubie has more on who is running.

Also on the Republican side, the man Gillibrand beat in November, Sandy Treadwell, says he wants to take another crack at representing the district in congress.

But not to be outdone, the democrats are drumming up potential candidates for the special election. Some possible GilliBrand replacements are relatively unknown, like Green County lawyer, Carol Schrager. Others are certainly outside the box.

“I’ve been asked and am considering,” said Larry Bulman, Saratoga County Democratic Committee Chair. “But also, I’ve had discussions with Mike Richter, the former goaltender for the New York Rangers.

... SNIP .... THERE IS NO PRIMARY, but representatives from the Republican and Democratic side of the aisle will be picking the one person that they want to represent their party on the official ballot.

There will be a special election at a "still to be determined" date, no primary. The county chairs caucus to select the party nominee.

Tedisco, Faso (& Sen. Little, as far as I know) are all pro-life conservatives.

Mr. Treadwell: can we refer to him as a wealthy liberal type?

The district borders CT, MA, VT, encircles Albany

Mr. Treadwell: Wealthy, not so liberal, but poor persona (no spine-ish)

Based on what I’ve read, it sounds like state Senator Betty Little is the best choice (she’s pro-life and pro-gun, if I’m not mistaken). Sandy Treadwell would probably lose again and while I have nothing against John Faso, he’s probably yesterday’s news.

I know Betty well, and I don’t think she wants it.

Pulling State Senators out of the mix may be ill-advised given the close margin. I’d prefer Faso to take a run, or maybe Tedisco (anybody but Treadwell).

" Who wants Gillibrand’s former seat?"

Sit down Bill, they mean Gillibrand's former elective position, not her actual, errr, 'seat'.

Once a horndog, always a horndog.

Who wants Gillibrand’s former seat?

Many would prefer to have her current seat.

Faso is yesterday's news? I've met him in person and am very impressed with his oratorical abilities and his conservative posititions. He's certainly not old and has the look that will appeal to female voters.

If he's in the district and interested in running for what I presume is a winnable seat for the GOP, he should certainly give it a try.

I’m really surprised Patterson went with Kristin Gillibrand. Seems like the last person a socialist Dem machine candidate would want. It’s also the kind of pick I’d make if I was Governor of NY and someone put a gun to my head and forced me to select a RAT replacement for Hillary. I’d pick the most obscure moderate upstate (as far away from NYC as possible) Dem with as little seniority as possible from a heavy GOP district to ensure we regain that Congressional seat once she’s out of it. Gillibrand probably fits that criteria more than any other NY Dem. She’s not even that “moderate”, she’s just moderate by marxist NYC Dem standards (had to be to win in a district that’s voted Republican for decades), which is causing them to throw a fit.

Come to think of it, if someone put a gun to my head and forced me to pick a well known Chicago machine RAT to replace Obama in the Senate, my first choice would have been Roland Burris as well (with his delusional narcissism, bland personality, being out of office for 14 years, and having a Jim Oberweis type track record in winning elections). Are these RAT governors channeling my mind, or what? ;-)

The only logical thing (from a Dem standpoint of wanting to ensure a Dem Senate win in 2010) that may have went through Patterson’s mind with this pick is that Gillibrand is indisputably pro-gun (100% rating from the NRA), whereas King is indisputably a gun-grabber (D ratings from the NRA and big fat F’s from the GOA). This flips one of the most loyal conservative constituencies from rallying around the Republican candidate to supporting the Dem instead. King is still more conservative than Gillibrand overall, but if she’s truly Pro-border control, Pro-tax cuts, and Pro-military, it instantly neutralizes the three “good” areas where the otherwise RINOish Peter King can claim loyal Republican support. The only thing that’s left for the conservative base is that King is pro-life and Gillibrand is pro-abortion, but single-issue pro-life campaigns have never done well in NY.

King vs. Gillibrand would essentially be a race between two moderate Democrats (moderate by NY standards, not Texas standards obviously), with Gillibrand the more likeable of the two.

Is King still considering running now that he’d have to face Gillibrand? He was chopping at the bit to run against Princess Carolyn. But if he has half a brain I think he realizes that Gillibrand would steamroller him.

I hope it’s not Sandy Treadwell, as he is pro”choice.”

I really like Little, Faso and Tedisco.

Treadwell sued to get rid of 2 primary opponents. He got what he deserved. Most likely a plant in the party.

seems reasonable that the GOP will go with Faso or Tedisco. Treadwell: no chance at nomination. Of course, the IND & CONSERVATIVE parties could ruin it by making it a 3-way. can we rate this rate R+12, meaning GOP 56% DEM 44%? I will defer to anyone is more knowledgeable on the district.

special elections are unpredictable.
