“A former faculty colleague of Obama at the University of Chicago once suggested that it was impossible to communicate any new ideas to this man. Obama is so married to his leftist opinions (which he firmly believes in, but tones down for political speeches and vote hustling) that he is not open to examining other points of view.”

I think PBRcat was referring to this article http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/30/us/politics/30law.html?_r=1&ref=politics&pagewanted=all
“The Chicago faculty is more rightward-leaning than that of other top law schools, but if teaching alongside some of the most formidable conservative minds in the country had any impact on Mr. Obama, no one can quite point to it.
I dont think anything that went on in these chambers affected him, said Richard Epstein, a libertarian colleague who says he longed for Mr. Obama to venture beyond his ideological and topical comfort zones. His entire life, as best I can tell, is one in which hes always been a thoughtful listener and questioner, but hes never stepped up to the plate and taken full swings. “
That was John Lott, an economist who was teaching at U Chicago, at the time. Lott is also the author or “More Guns, Less Crime.” He has worked for the federal Sentencing Commission, and a well known economist with a strong research and publishing record.
