Economic stimulus package has a potential windfall for California government

Reporting from Washington and Sacramento -- The economic stimulus package congressional leaders are drafting would wipe out nearly a quarter of California's budget shortfall, a potential windfall that could help end the impasse over how to close the nearly $42-billion gap.

The House bill, which is likely to be voted on next week, would bring the state more than $11 billion in healthcare and education money that could go directly to reducing the deficit through mid-2010, state officials learned Thursday night.

"This takes a big bite out of the state's budget gap," said Jean Ross, executive director of the California Budget Project, a Sacramento-based think tank. "It is better news than many of us had anticipated."

How the hell does this stimulate Ca. economy. This is plain and simple payback from Aunt Nancy. Prediction on California’s budget: 11 billion from the feds, probably more when all said and done. Raise taxes and defer residual deficit until 2010 election year. Back to business as usual.

What a sham wow.

'Tis a neat trick. When California can't get enough money to pay for its programs, they get other states to pay for them. When America can't get enough money to pay for its programs, it borrows money from other countries.

This will end badly.

Yeah this is nothing but a welfare bill for state govs and social programs. Almost no jobs will be created as a result of the $825 billion boondoogle. Very little is going for infrastructure and real jobs that would ar least result in physical improvements. What a joke.

That is EXACTLY what it is. It will do NOTHING for the economy. The sole purpose of this disaster upon America is political, and will serve only to build Obama’s welfare-based voter army he seeks. Socialism, power and control. Nothing else matters -—

Only significant reduction in spending and the massive confiscatory taxation in California will turn this mess around. But our ultra-liberal state legislature would think of such things -— California is headed for disaster, all due to the “Midas Touch” of the liberals.

Gee, that's $200 million per Electoral Vote.

Exactly, the deficit will be even worse next year when the Dems finagle a way to spend this money first.
