New York Gov. David Paterson will name Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, an upstate Democrat, to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate, a Democratic official with knowledge of the governor's decision told FOX News on Thursday night.

Gillibrand, elected in 2006, represents the state's 20th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. She is the first Democrat to represent the district since 1978 -- and the first female representative of the district.

Paterson is scheduled to formally announce his pick Friday

Gillibrand was re-elected to a second term in the sprawling 20th District by a comfortable margin. To do so, she has taken some conservative positions, including on gun rights.

Her voting record says otherwise.

The ACU says GIllabrand has an 8% conservative voting record.

I have a similar democRAT critter, Tim Waltz in my 1st district MN, who proudly touts his NRA 100% rating but is left-wing socialist commie on everything else.... I don't believe anyone can truly be a supporter of the 2nd amendment (or the rest of the Bill of Rights) and be aligned with the democRAT-socialist party. They are pure unadulterated evil, including any of the so-called conservative democRATs. That is a bygone era, and all that is left now are socialist-fascist-communist democRATs.

You hit the nail on the head. Hillbrand like Waltz is NOT conservative.

Are you suggesting he hit it?

Wonder if there's a Vegas line on that...

I read that she has an “A” rating from the NRA “. That’s a positive.

Wow, a D.I.N.O. - Who’da thunk it.
Like, way better pick than, you know, C.K.

Are you in the 20th? She’s rather conservative on many issues, I believe, and the guv’ needs to shore up his crumbling flank as he’s been attacking sportsmen (e.g., grabbing hunting license fees for non-sporting purposes, trying to close the last remaining pheasant hatchery [and grab the funds], etc.)

What does the ACU's rating have to do with whether she's conservative or not? The ACU ratings are goofy, using a few selective votes (often multiple ones on same issue), and sometimes grading big-government positions as "correct" ones. It no longer is a reliable measure.

Really?

Shall we go over each of the ACU's 2007 rated votes for Gillabrand?

The last time I went through such an exercise for some other politician (I forget who it was), the ACU rating seemed accurate.

Reports out of my hometown of Albany, NY are that U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, who just started her second term in Congress, has been called to Gov. David Patterson's office for 11 a.m. on Friday. This is significant since Patterson has announced he will name Hillary Clinton's replacement as NY Senator at noon. Gillibrand represents the reddest of red districts in New York (the late U.S. Rep. Gerald Solomon once made Patrick Kennedy cry on the floor of the House.) Gillibrand would never have won this seat in the first place had the then office-holder John Sweeney not gone on a self-destructive binge. As such, she has had to portray herself as a moderate in order to get reelected and even went as far as to receive the endorsement of the NRA. This is where it gets very good for the GOP. First, long-time U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, who ran for Congress after her husband was killed by a crazed gunman on the Long Island Railroad, has indicated that she will challenge Gillibrand in a primary, specifically because of her support from the NRA. What plays for Gillibrand in her upstate district is a liability where the bulk of Democratic primary voters live. Second, a nasty contest on the Dem side will drag on until the second Tuesday in September when the New York primary is finally held. That leaves the victor with only 7 weeks or so to restock a campaign warchest for the general election. That isn't much time and it certainly doesn't allow much time to pass in order to heal fresh wounds. Third, the GOP seems to be rallying around U.S. Rep. Peter King of Long Island as their standard-bearer in the race. King is very close to Rudy Giuliani who we now turn to... Fourth, Gov. Patterson was not elected to that post, rather he took over when Eliot Spitzer was forced to resign after getting caught with a hooker. By passing over NY AG Andrew Cuomo for appointment to the Senate, Patterson has just ensured that he will be challenged for the Gov. nomination himself by Cuomo. Again, a brutal primary between these two benefits Giuliani who is expected to run for Gov. and would likely be unopposed for the GOP nomination. Finally, in the short-term, there is a long-list of very well-qualified Republicans waiting to run for this House seat. (This is such a good Republican seat -- think Virginia's 1st Dist. -- that I'd almost be tempted to return and run for it. Almost.) So, there you have it. In less than two years, Republicans may very well be able to point to New York and see Gov. Giuliani, Sen. King and another U.S. Rep. with the last one coming much, much sooner.

IF this does prove out, then it is about the best you could hope for. Getting a national Dem that is strongly pro-gun and anti-bailout out of New York is a wonder of wonders.

She’s probably liberal on tax/spend and some social issues, but, I’ll take what I can get right now.

Maybe the Subpoena against Cuomo tilted the table in favor of Gillibrand? Might have made the difference.

I wish we would hold the euphoria until he actually names her, he could still name Carolyn Mahoney, who wants it so bad she can taste it and is dumb as a stump... remember we got excited about an election in Illinois and the dem’s thought twice about a special election as a result.

rmlew, it wasn’t Gilman’s district before Sweeney’s. It was Gerry Solomon’s. It used to be the 22nd Dist., but was renamed after the 2000 redistricting and NY lost seats.

There are 25 votes that the ACU graded Gillibrand on in 2007. 24 of those votes the ACU says Gillibrand voted like a liberal.

Let's start with the first 5...

1)Hillibrand voted for the Minimum Wage hike.

2)She voted for a bill mandating federal funding of embryonic stem cells derived from surplus embryos at fertilization clinics.

3)She voted against the surge in Iraq.

4)She voted against the secret-ballot for union members.

5)She voted for tax payer funding for 10 Amtrak long-distance routes that have lost the most passenger revenue.

I could go on.

The ACU nails her...for being a 92% liberal.

Yes, Sweeney’s personal problems really screwed the pooch for us. The Post-Star capitalized on them, and ran him into the ground to push the Kos Kiddies’ chosen gal. One of the “journalists” at the paper follows her around like a puppy dog. I have mixed feelings. She was the first Dem ever chosen from my district and she’ll be gone, but she could mess things up for the next 6 years. (As if they’re not messed up enough).
