DALLAS -- A suspected burglar was fatally wounded on Wednesday during a shoot-out in the 300 block of Hobson Avenue, according to authorities. A man stopped to drop off a newspaper at his mother's house while she was gone and saw that the front door was kicked in and a 17-year-old was inside, police said. The teen, Gabriel Flores, drew his gun and pointed it at the man, who also drew his gun, police said. The son had a concealed handgun license, according to police. Flores fired and the son returned fire, striking Flores, police said. He was taken to an area hospital and died shortly after arrival, police said. The case will likely be referred to a grand jury, police said.

What I don’t get is that when we read these stories with a happy ending, the good guy always had a permit. I’ll admit I don’t have one, as they are expensive to procure and retain, although I won’t admit to violating any laws. In that situation, however, the good guy wouldn’t have been in violation of Texas law even if he didn’t have a permit, so I can’t really see why that would be relevant. I don’t have a problem with his license, I’m glad he has one, but it isn’t an issue here. I just wonder if the media is trying to impress upon us that we should never be prepared to defend our property, our lives, or those of others without a license.
Although I am a unreserved defender of the Second Amendment I will say that the son was very irresponsible to have chased the burglar down a residential street firing his weapon at the fleeing burglar.
This kind of behavior does responsible gun owners no favors.
This man could have easily killed innocent bystanders, damaged cars or homes.
He was completely within his rights to defend his mothers home and his own life but once the the burglar had fled his mothers property he should have holstered his gun and called the police.
He also could have given chase but when the kid started shooting on the run the responsible thing to do was to stop the chase because other people were also being put in danger.
Any Freeper in Dallas needs to buy that guy a drink!
“This kind of behavior does responsible gun owners no favors. “
So you let an armed person who is willing to shoot others get away? This guy was doing the entire neighborhood a service....and a valuable one at that.
I might agree with you if the perp already had not started firing.....that shows he clearly has no respect for life.
“This man could have easily killed innocent bystanders, damaged cars or homes.”
He didn’t.
“He also could have given chase but when the kid started shooting on the run the responsible thing to do was to stop the chase because other people were also being put in danger.”
Not chasing him would NOT put those people in any kinfd of safety with such a thug on the loose. Don’t delude yourself.
I forgot to add that it is all too easy to question something after the fact, and in your warm home. You almost make it sound like the CCW holder opened fire. Geez!
I would rather that he shoots someone than I accidentally shoot someone.
No one can shoot accurately on the run. If you try to shoot on the run you have no idea where your round will hit. If you have run any kind of distance your accuracy also is very poor because your breathing and fine muscle control is poor. (Try a biathlon some time)
One of the primary rules of firearm safety is be sure of your target and your back stop. If you are chasing someone and firing at him you can not be sure of either.
He had already shot the kid so he was not going to get away kid was going to have to seek medical attention, chasing him was pointless. The guy was mad as heck and flooded with adrenalin he wasnt thinking.
I dont blame the man for shooting the kid in his mothers house after he had been fired upon or even if the kid had only pulled his weapon. I blame him for irresponsibly discharging his weapon in hazardous manner.
