President Barack Obama is going to get his blackberry.
On Monday, a government agency that the Obama administration -- but that is probably the National Security Agency -- added to a standard blackberry a super-encryption package.... and Obama WILL be able to use it ... still for routine and personal messages.
It's not clear whether he yet has the device.
With few exceptions, government Blackberries aren't designed for encryption that protects messages above the "SECRET" status, so it's not clear whether Obama is getting something new and special. The exception: the Sectera Edge from General Dynamics, which allows for TOP SECRET voice conversations.

yes but most business people do not have other nations targeting them.
Guys on wall street? Big pharma? Advanced technology?
You don’t even need nations targeting them — just competitors, right?
And that is the reason the Secret Service told him he couldn’t have it in the first place...because of the GPS.
But considering all the risk, why is Obama so adament about keeping his blackberry? Are the messages to/from the blackberry subject to the freedom of information act? If not this should not happen. The possabilities of what could happen are too frightening to even contemplate.
How can we find out if they will be subject to FOA?
Sure they do but thats their problem and they don’t control nuclear bombs.
I get your point but don’t want to post on this thread anymore. I don’t want to be associated with what could be twisted into something I don’t want to be associated with by the Secret Service.
“How can we find out if they will be subject to FOA?”
They are, but I imagine he would tie them up in court for a while.
I won’t do ‘conspiracy theory’ on this one.
I’ll just note they aren’t nicknamed ‘crackberries’ for nothing.
I suspect President Obama will realize he’s kept ‘up to the minute’ by the Whitehouse ‘system’ and that will be the last we see or hear about his blackberry fear of withdrawal symptoms.
How much of President Bush’s communications were subject to FOA? Is it by message or by instrument used or by the place where the message was sent?
ARGHHHHHHHHH....WhO is his handler????
You are right, and for him to have that thing and it not be subject to the same rules as everything else for everyone else is outrageous. This we MUST raise holy cain about.
I understand.
Last thing — I believe that in this brave new world of gadgets, etc., as a nation we should give some concern to protecting our businesses and their intellectual property. Don’t know if this is gubmint’s job, but it should be somebody’s job.
That article says White House Communications are kept from the public until the end of the term of office and possibly longer. Is that true? And if it is, then how did we know about White House Communications concerning Watergate, all of Clinton’s stuff at various times...???
Even assuming the tracking ability hasn't been turned off, so what? The President's schedule is fairly well known. Knowing where he is and getting past the Secret Service are two very different things.
He wants everybody to sacrifice but he’s not willing to give up his Blackberry? How typical!
Heck, they could send a guided missile of some kind and pop him from places they cannot even see him, and from great distances too I would imagine. This is too stupid and only someone in desperate need of privacy would do this.
This what I have been saying since September. We need to come together and have our own army. We need to put aside our internal squabbles and come together to oppose this monster and his army. We simply need a central hub where people can gather to easily obtain information about what they can do to fight, be it send e-mail, etc. go to protests or marches, and the tools...phone, fax numbers etc. to do that. *sigh* But,trying to gather Republicans is like herding chickens. What is best about us...self reliance, independence....will destroy us.
“Dont know if this is gubmints job, but it should be somebodys job.”
its my job, call me if you want a proposal :)
The gubbint has created huge and expensive regulations already. The don’t follow their own rules though.
MSNBC airs two hour leg-tingling special tonight with Chrissy and Olberdork.
Actually more disturbing than what Obama will do with the Blackberry and the risk concerning the GPS, is who is it that needs to contact him secretly and at anytime, for marching orders perhaps?
Wait till Bwaney Fwank demands all his emails.....Whoops! I forgot!
I’ll do that — as soon as I figure out how to get my wireless mouse to work. I’ve implemented all the various technical fixes — shaking, tapping, hitting, pounding and cursing. However, there seems to be a fundamental design flaw that renders it “immune” to the traditional technical solutions. I might have to try something more “homeopathic.” Throwing against the wall, perhaps.
Our Achilles Heel - we want to be free to live our own lives - and allow others the freedom to do thesame- the one rule"Your rights end where my nose begins"
On the other hand, the enemy feels they know what's right for everyone and feel they have the right - and want the power to - force everyone to live under their rule.
"We stand together or we fall apart"mt - I say that should be our banner..
HS. If they are his personal communications as opposed to official communications, they are exempt from FOIA. Even Presidents have private lives.
