MEXICO CITY (Dow Jones)--Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim's decision to loan the New York Times $250 million gives a vote of confidence to a debt-strapped publisher at a time when the financial viability of print is being widely questioned in the age of the Internet. The New York Times Co. (NYT) said Tuesday it will use the money to refinance existing debt, but also continues to seek other financing and will press ahead with cost-cutting measures. Slim's move to expand his involvement with the Times raised some eyebrows given difficulties faced by newspaper publishers seeing double-digit declines in advertising revenue.

Carlos Slim is another left wing socialist Billionaire in the likes of Soros and Buffet. His money contribution to the New York Times is to make it more left wing than it is now if this is even possible.

In 20 years there will be newspapers only in the most impoverished backwaters of the globe. Devices like the Amazon Kindle will completely replace newsprint (not touting Kindle, I returned mine because its human factors are not great in the current version 1.0).
I guess Carlos Slim believes he can milk something from New York over the next 5 or so years, because the NYT doesn't have much longer if even that.
I see a future for the NY Times as well. He’s investing in bird cage liners and fish wrap.

It’s odd yours is coming in early March, mine was shipped immediately in early December and in what universe does it take 8+ weeks to deliver a consumer electronic device? Strange.
Either you’re getting the next version or Amazon is stacking up the Kindle orders. Who knows.
In any case my experience wasn’t that much different from many others commenting on Amazon. I love the Kindle concept and indeed I sent mine back with about 20 sample chapters (from about 20 books) and five+ full paid-for books. Also a couple magazine subscriptions.
The screen is indeed nice, it works in all the lighting conditions I tried. The wireless download is fast. The batteries keep it powered for 3 to 5 days (depending upon usage). It recharges fast, a few hours. The Kindle software and the user interface are OK.
But the buttons to flip “pages” just annoyed the heck out of me, and the way I personally had to hold the Kindle was constantly annoying (esp. while laying on the couch, my favorite reading spot). I couldn’t get used to it over three weeks.
I know I’m not the only person who had that experience.
But you should give it a try because it might work for you where it didn’t for me.
I’m certainly planning to buy another Kindle sometime in the future if they can work out those handling problems (which I stress may not be “problems” for you).

Thanks for your reply. It looks like we’re hijacking this thread and turning it into a Kindle thread. I’m anxiously awaiting mine, especially because of its high storage capacity. If I find the ergonomics work for me, it’ll be the best thing available since I keep running out of book shelf space, meaning I’ve had to terminate memberships in the History Book Club and the Book-of-the-Month Club.
I have one other question. Once a Kindle receives a book, can that book be downloaded to a computer? Then, if it can be so downloaded, can you upload it back again. If so, a Kindle could be used, along with a few DVDs, to hold a truly massive library.
