Reporting from Washington -- More than 1 million spectators convened on the National Mall to watch Barack Obama take the oath of office Tuesday, but it was unclear if the crowd surpassed the record thought to have been set at Lyndon B. Johnson's 1965 inauguration.
Though early estimates ranged as high as 2 million people, satellite images of Obama's swearing-in suggested the crowd was probably about half that, said Clark McPhail, who has been analyzing crowds on the National Mall since the 1960s.

I thought Christ and Allah only had 750,000, and they had U2 open the concert.
Not only does upping the number to see the messiah, mean he really is the messiah drawing people to see him from near and far, they just can't help themselves but flock towards his presence.sarc/
But, it also gives DC more dollars from the Feds to take care of all those EXTRA people.
I don’t think that there were all that many there but the noise level must of broken all the records. The people that were there were screaming and screaming his name like they were a bunch of teeny boppers screaming to their idol at a rock concert. Very undignified and immature.
What one must remember is that the inauguration took place in a demographically Democratic area, Wash. D.C. They are almost all Libs, and also the population of Wash. D.C. is primarily Black. So of course there would be a large turnout, as Wash. D.C. is Black and liberal Dem and of course is in close proximity to the Capitol and inaugural festivities. What else would one expect?
Cool!
Ants a picnic looking for scraps is all I see. All hail The Queen.
800,000 via satellite, according to a crowd estimator that has done sporting and political events:

So, I guess there were as many cops and soldiers as there were civilian spectators.
Downplaying the crowd size? From the LA Times? This is treason!! (to liberals)
The point is that a record amount of trash was left behind. Something to think about.
Anyone remember the overhead pictures of the Promise Keepers rally about 10 years ago? Pretty sure there were more people at that, than at the O-lovefest.
Is it racist to want to know if there was a lull in the crime rate yesterday?
The inauguration WAS a crime scene.
versus this:
Once again, there is a difference in the angle shown. This is called a "low oblique" view. The picture looking at the Washington Monument (from yesterday) is a "high oblique" shot.
But I see fewer "gaps" in the crowd from 1997's "Stand in the Gap" Promise Keepers gathering of men only (!). That event reported to have between 700K and 1.2 M men only (!).
FWIW
Latest reported here is 1.4 million.
And there were lots of people who were turned away, which did not go over well as most of them had tickets.
