Illegal Irish 'need Obama's help'
Irish Times ^ | 20 Jan 2009 | STEVEN CARROLL

Posted on 01/20/2009 12:29:43 PM PST by BGHater

AN IRISH MEP has written to US President-elect Barack Obama to highlight that up to 50,000 undocumented Irish immigrants living in the US need his “political assistance now more than ever.”

Seán Ó Neachtain, Fianna Fáil MEP for Ireland North and West, urged Mr Obama to consider introducing measures to allow undocumented and illegal Irish to remain in the US legally.

Mr Ó Neachtain said the situation of the illegal Irish in America was “unacceptable” and they needed “urgent help”.

However, he said he understood “fully” that US authorities had to maintain tight security at airports and ports due to international terrorism threats.

“I am urging you as the new president of America to show a sense of compassion and understanding of the very difficult situation that many illegal and undocumented Irish people find themselves in at present in America,” Mr Ó Neachtain wrote.

“With the very difficult economic times in Ireland, we are going to have to address this political issue of the undocumented Irish in America with a renewed spirit of determination and purpose . . . We need your political assistance now more than ever.”

It was difficult economic times in Ireland 20 years ago when my wife emigrated. She stayed legal all the way. And her very nice fiance even helped with the legal bills!

No sympathy from this quarter.

"Nah. They need to go back to their own country."

Those are my people! Join the struggle to overthrow the brutal and oppressive Obama regime that has committed horrific acts of human rights abuses against my people and their struggle!

Only 50,000? The fact that Irish illegals were ignored was used by proponents of amnesty as a reason why everyone here illegally (meaning 20+ million Mexicans) should be allowed to stay. From they way they talked I thought it was a lot more than 50,000.

Send them back and so they can get in line and ask to be allowed in.

I’d take them before I take the mexicans....

This thread reminds me of a Blazing Saddles scene where the townspeople argue over what minority can live in Rock Ridge....

I believe they welcomed the Chinese and the black folk but said NO WAY to the irish.........

Meanwhile, the Irish are very tough on their own illegal immigrants.
And it’s Kennedy’s fault anyway for changing the immigrant quotas.

The Irish have melted into american society,

Bank robbers "melt into society" once they have committed their crimes too, but I wouldn't want them to get away with it.

Don't be so sure. I had a close relationship with one and got tired of him griping about how much money doctors make (in Ireland the government limits medical doctor salaries), how industry is sending jobs overseas, how bad Bush was, blah, blah, blah. Many want to turn America into Ireland, a highly socialist country. Yet, they moved here because of the opportunities. Idiots--can't see truth because they want government to do everything for them.

"I’d take them before I take the mexicans. The Irish have melted into american society, the mexicans have not."

Melted is right. Back in the 90s I was between appointments in Manhattan and stopped in a pub for late afternoon lunch. The place was empty so I was seated in the mezzanine above the bar. Down below those impish Irish immigrants (who fit in so well) were negotiating an arms deal, right in plain sight and within earshot.

A terrorist is a terrorist, an illegal is an illegal--even if he speaks with a charming brogue.
