The GOP's five likeliest Obama backers (Guess Who's #1?)
Politico ^ | January 20, 2009 | JOSH KRAUSHAAR

President-elect Barack Obama’s outreach to Republicans may be generating goodwill on the other side of the aisle, but the honeymoon is likely to be short-lived. There’s just too much distance between Obama and congressional Republicans on too many key economic, social and foreign policy issues.

There are, however, some Republicans who stand to have a less adversarial relationship with the new administration. Either their past history or present statements put them at the top of the list of GOP members who are expected to work closely with the White House, even if it means bucking their own party.

Here is Politico’s list of the five Republicans most likely to embrace Obama:

1. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)

As curious as it sounds, Obama’s rival for the presidency could end up being a key ally.

On issue after issue, from campaign finance to HMO regulation to immigration reform, McCain has shown a willingness to reach across the aisle — a habit that hasn’t endeared him to his own party.

Indeed, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) said he believes that McCain is prepared to launch a national rehabilitation campaign that will lead him to a strong alliance with Obama.“I believe Obama has an ace in the hole among Senate Republicans. This unlikely ace can deliver not only the GOP moderates needed to break a filibuster but also the stamp of bipartisanship: the 2008 GOP standard-bearer, John McCain,” Santorum recently wrote in The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Not curious in the least, considering McNut is an attention whore whose political philosophy isn't that removed from Obama's.

OK, I haven’t read the article. But let me guess who the other’s are: Lindsey Graham, Olympia Snow, Susan Collins. Is Hagel still in the Senate?

A timeline of FreeRepublic.com:

Fall ‘07: “McCain is a traitor who backstabs us any chance he can get; I could never support him!”
Summer ‘08: “McCain is a staunch Republican who’s only gone against us a few times; of course I support him!”
Winter ‘08: “McCain is a traitor who backstabs us any chance he can get; I could never support him!”

Ah, election blinders... nice that they’re coming off.

McCain’s obsession with bipartisanship is beyond insanity. He should just get out of the party NOW and become a ‘Rat!!!

Hagel is gone. His term expired a few days ago.

Former Ag Secy and Governor Mike Johanns is the new junior senator for Nebraska.

Yup. Just saw Lindsey Graham being interviewed and he was kissing butt big time.

Looked like a little kid standing next to Carl Cameron. At least a foot difference in their height.

“Staunch” conservative Tom Coburn has been talking up Hussein all week.

Most Senators want good press....and like McCain they ride on the coattails of liberals to get it.

McCain worked as hard as he could against Bush. Why is it curious that he will work against conservatives to help Obama? One thing McCain understands is how to get camera time with the Omedia cultists

Voinovich(R-IN), Lugar(R-IN), and Kirk(R-IL). The Black population in Indiana would crucify Lugar and Voinovich if they didn’t support Obama. Kirk is in Illinois - no doubt dictated to by the Daley machine. Collins of Maine and McCain of Arizona round out the top five.

Terribly disappointing. Republicans need to clean house.

Replacing McCain in office needs to be top priority next election. It really needs to happen for the republican party to reform.

LOL!

However, for particularly his pro-life stand, as well as other conservative views, I would still greatly prefer McCain as president than Obama.
