The year 2008 tied with 2001 as the eighth warmest year on record for the Earth, based on the combined average of worldwide land and ocean surface temperatures through December, according to a preliminary analysis by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. For December alone, the month also ranked as the eighth warmest globally, for the combined land and ocean surface temperature. The assessment is based on records dating back to 1880.
The analyses in NCDC’s global reports are based on preliminary data, which are subject to revision. Additional quality control is applied to the data when late reports are received several weeks after the end of the month and as increased scientific methods improve NCDC’s processing algorithms.
NCDC’s ranking of 2008 as the eighth warmest year compares to a ranking of ninth warmest based on an analysis by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The NOAA and NASA analyses differ slightly in methodology, but both use data from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center – the federal government's official source for climate data.

Yeah,I happen to know that 14,573 B.C. was the eighth warmest.
I’m glad I live in the US which had the 37th warmest year and the 79th warmest December. I don’t believe these guys one bit regarding global temperatures.
Sea Ice Ends the Year At Same Level It Was In 1979
Daily Tech | 1/1/2009 | Michael Asher
Rapid growth spurt leaves amount of ice at levels seen 29 years ago.
Thanks to a rapid rebound in recent months, global sea ice levels now equal those seen 29 years ago, when the year 1979 also drew to a close.
Ice levels had been tracking lower throughout much of 2008, but rapidly recovered in the last quarter. In fact, the rate of increase from September onward is the fastest rate of change on record, either upwards or downwards.
The data is being reported by the University of Illinois's Arctic Climate Research Center, and is derived from satellite observations of the Northern and Southern hemisphere polar regions.
And, does any remember a heat wave that wiped out the cold start to 2008:
Dr. Martin Hertzberg, a physical chemist and retired Navy meteorologist.
"As a scientist and life-long liberal Democrat, I find the constant regurgitation of the anecdotal, fear-mongering clap-trap about human-caused global warming to be a disservice to science," Mr. Hertzberg wrote in Sept. 26's USA Today. "From the El Nino year of 1998 until Jan., 2007, the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere near its surface decreased some 0.25 C (0.45 F). From Jan., 2007 until the spring of 2008, it dropped a whopping 0.75 C (1.35 F)."
Confusing the Greenies with facts bump!
The warming trend is not caused by mankind, and I like it.
Us too. In below zero actual weather-with a wind-chill of 34 below zero for last 4 days. Closed schools Thursday and Friday.
I am still waiting for the global warming to show up in Wisconsin
And how many of the reading were recorded by weather/temperature stations that are not valid as being surrounded by parking lots and buildings?
That teacher must have studied global warming at the same place as my granddaughter’s 6th grade science teacher. Granddaughter asked “if global warming here on earth was caused by humans, why was Mars also getting warmer?” Teacher answered “we’re not talking about Mars are we”
Au contrare! The current warming trend IS caused by Man, or at least by certain men.
The current decreases in global temperatures, OTOH, are entirely natural.
Warming trend = lines on a graph, composed from messaged data, and drawn by agenda driven men; decreased temperatures = data points measured & recorded by instruments.
Global records have been kept for such a short time that the data is meaningless. And, who knows, some of the earliest “global” data might have been made up by the agenda drivers in the last few years.
The year 2008 tied with 2001 as the eighth most active sunspot activity period on record for the Sun, based on the combined average of worldwide observation of the Suns temperatures through December,
ScienceDaily has really turned into ‘RetreadDaily’.
Folks keep posting crap from them and they go and do something stupid like repeating Hansen’s nonsense that came out before 2008 was even over, proving they ain’t worth a ****.
nope, this is all new http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2009/20090113_ncdcstats.html
The crackpots who are behind the climate hoaxing are the same people who are in charge of gathering data, calibrating the instruments and crunching all the numbers. Why would anyone believe their statistics?
It could have been the coldest year in the last 1000 years and they would say it was in the top ten warmest. Who would be the wiser?
After -23 last month, I would rather warming also.
After the lousy tomaotes, and the early frost killing what was left of the garden, I’d rather warming.
After an early frost killed a lot of the fruit blossoms last spring, I’d rather warming.
Unfortunately, as me dear departed Father used to tell me, “what you want, and what you’ll get are too very different things, Boy. Now, shut up and eat your gruel....” *<];-’)
from coast to coast we have seen the damaging cold this fall and winter, I can’t believe they would even attempt this.
good news is that Bush pushed off the global warming tax hike for eight years. Now the weather will push it back some more, or ruin the careers of anyone who pushed the hoax
scary to know that there are teachers like that
