British scientists have been given permission to treat stroke patients with injections of cells from an aborted baby, it emerged last night.
In a world first, stem cells from a 12-week-old foetus will be injected into patients' brains.
Experts believe the cells will regenerate areas damaged by strokes and restore movement and mental skills.
But anti-abortion groups condemned the trials as 'sick' and said it was barbaric for society to use aborted foetuses this way.
A quarter of a million Britons have a severe disability caused by a stroke. Until now there has been no way of repairing the damage created when the brain is starved of oxygen.
In the two-year trial, starting next year, four groups of three patients will be given stem cells developed by the biotech company ReNeuron in Surrey.
The 'blank cells' can turn into any type of human tissue. The ones needed for the trial havebeen grown in culture after they were taken from a foetus's brain.
ReNeuron could use cells from an adult, but says foetal cells are more adaptable. The firm says it can produce all the cells it will ever need from one foetus.
In tests on rats, stem cells restored the movement of animals left disabled by strokes.
Scientists hope one injection could provide a long-lasting improvement to humans.
The first group will receive two million cells, with the final guinea pigs getting 20million.
Trial leader Keith Muir, of Glasgow's Southern General Hospital, said: 'If it works, it may allownew nerve cells to grow, or regeneration of existing cells.'
But Josephine Quintavalle, of Comment On Reproductive Ethics, said using a foetus was 'utterly unacceptable', adding: 'This is about one life being sacrificed for hypothetical benefits.'

This has been tried before and created nothing but masses and masses of tumors ... just give the stroke patients whatever is necessary to minimize/halt brain damage ,, collect their own stem cells from their own blood ,, grow a zillion of them and use those...sure it’ll take a while but with modern drugs and timely intervention (3 hours I believe is the critical cutoff) you can wait out the time to grow the persons own stemcells while they undergo standard therapy...

Result will be no cures, more cases of brain tumors. Embryonic stem cell “research” has taken on the same credibility as AGW.
My husband had a stroke,age 50, five month ago.As soon as I saw him in the ER in knew he had a stroke.But they treated him for the first 24 hours for vertigo.
Just wait until they have brain cancer instead of a stroke.
Excellent. While trying to recoveer from their strokes they can begin growing bunches of little brain tumors from the embryonic stem cells going sour on them.
