Commentary: Bush saved 10 million lives
CNN ^ | January 16, 2009 | Bill Frist

Posted on 01/16/2009 7:29:17 AM PST by rightwingintelligentsia

Editor's note: Bill Frist, a physician, is former Republican majority leader of the U.S. Senate and a professor of medicine and business at Vanderbilt University.

(CNN) -- A legacy of President George W. Bush will be that he saved 10 million lives around the world.

His critics ignore it, but name another president about whom one can say that with such certainty. It is what historians will say a decade from now looking back. Not bad for a president who leaves office with the lowest approval rating in recent memory.

The bottom line is: George Bush is a healer.

First, a surprise proclamation came on January 29, 2003.

I was in the first row in the House chamber when three quarters through his State of the Union address, the president boldly said: "I ask the Congress to commit $15 billion over the next five years ... to turn the tide against AIDS in the most afflicted nations of Africa and the Caribbean" and "lead the world in sparing innocent people from a plague of nature."

According to the loons on left, then that’s about equal to the civilian fatalities in Iraq!

Heck, he saved twice that many Muslims that we did not kill in rage after a major American city was nuked.

That is the real reason we went into Iraq and Afghanistan. President Bush knew that American rage would not be turned off by the media after Muslim fascists killed a hundred thousand Americans.

$15 billion/10 million - $15,000 per life. How many lives would have been saved if only 1 or 2 billion had been spent on shipping clean drinking water to needy people around the globe? (And, where does it say in the Constitution that American taxpayers are supposed to pay for saving lives around the globe?)

This is a defense of Compassionate Conservatism, i.e. Big Government.

Yup. W is a wonderful, compassionate man, but he had little respect for the constitutional limits on his power.

If Bush had faought back against the media, he would be much more well regarded now. Instead he and Cheney chose to stay “above the fray”.

He may have saved 10 million foreigners but it cost thousands of American soldiers lives. I wonder how many of the 10 Million have allegiance to America.

Heck, he saved twice that many Muslims that we did not kill in rage after a major American city was nuked.

Which killed ten times as many American servicemembers as would have died had we fought the war like WWII instead of Vietnam.

I'd kill a million ragheads if it would bring back one American soldier or Marine. Conversely, I'd kill a million of them to prevent the death of that American. Next time we go to nominate a leader, no more 'compassionate conservatives', please.

The military is the hero here, not Bush. It was the military that had to adapt and figure out how to win in Iraq. Bush and his crew didn’t adapt. And while Frist might think Bush saved 10 million people, he thoroughly destroyed the GOP and the conservative movement. How does that work for you?

This is a defense of Bush!? All from a big government, socialist perspective. Is there any hope when Republicans are spewing this filth. My guess is that by these standards Obama will be even better.
Are there ANY Republicans who have even a nodding acquaintance with principles. Or is it always were not quite as bad as the other guys-yet. Whatever Republicans are resisting today they will be accepting tomorrow. Just name me two Republicans to the right of FDR. That is, someone who advocates pre-FDR level of government. How about pre-LBJ.
It’s pretty much over, folks.

Heros in their own time are never recognized among their peers.

You said it! Harry S Truman stepped in as Commander-in-Chief in the middle of WW2.

Roosevelt hadn't even told him about the Manhattan project while HST was VP.

But he had the courage to end the Pacific war by dropping two atomic bombs.

His popularity plummeted as we went into the post-war era, He wasn't really liked by either party or the American public. He got a lot of bad press: For example, je came out of the Pendergast Kansas City political machine. He played poker with his Chief of Staff General Vaughn. (It was considered politic to let the President win the pots). He took a press beating for nationalizing the railroads. And on and on.

Now look at his place in history.
