I’m sure he did! And, I’m sure his wife is one relieved woman tonight.

Or you could have Dick Cheney ride on top of the engine cowling with his shotgun.

"I was remarking to my husband that he is only 57 but looks about 80"

I was thinking the same thing; he looks much older than 57, it must be from spending so much time worrying about the responsibilities of flying so many people around.

I saw a post to that effect too. That the men stood back and let the women and children out first.
While admirable if true, I wonder if this really happened. Letting the women and children off first sounds like a good and chivalrous thing to do.

But all of us that have been on many airplanes also know that trying to do this would be tough to pull off without dangerously slowing the overall evacuation. Seems to me that just evacuating in order as the rows of seats go out...would be fastest.

Dunno. It would be nice to think that the “women and children first” ethic was alive and well. But it would be sad if it resulted in a clusterf*** in the aisles.

What an excellent and very interesting post in #428! Thank you for your insight, and for your service to our country in the Air Force.

Got to give Airbus some props for building a tough jet.

Heard some expert say (on one of the many news reports tonight about this jet crash) that this Airbus model has more bouyancy than other models of planes, ie Boeing 737. Anyone else know anything about this?

Sully had a glider license. Must have known He'd need it flying Airbuses.

You can even tell if the pilot is former AF or Navy. AF pilots “float” the plane to the runway. Navy pilots tend to stick em down ala a carrier landing.

Because it was one channel down from CNBC which is what was on at the time. A quick surf of the other channels revealed that MSNBC had the best view at that time.

....and for the life of me, I can’t understand why I’m even bothering to answer your post.

Have a nice day.

I don’t know about buoyancy, but from some stuff I read on other boards, apparently the A320 series do have a button on the overhead console labeled “DITCHING.” Really. It closes all the various valves and ports on the bottom and sides of the aircraft (equipment cooling intakes, pressure outflow valve from the cabin, etc.) to try and keep it afloat longer.

Some helicopters do use a screen or deflector in front of their turbine intakes - but helicopter airspeeds are typically much lower, and those are turbines, not high-bypass turbofans which need to push through much larger amounts of air. The Sea Kings I worked with had a fibreglass fairing in front of the turbine intakes which was called a “FOD deflector”.
