Something I am curious about - anybody ever put one of them down in the water before, and kept the hull together?

Had this happened decades ago when the Hudson was super polluted the plane probably could have done a wheels down landing and taxied to the shoreline.

Yeah but everyone would have died in the subsequent fire when the river ignited...

The fact that it is full of fuel helps it stay afloat.

“hard landing”? Land a Maule Rocket on a 200’ grass strip/pasture a couple times. THAT is a hard landing.

Truthfully, it was probably more a LOUD landing than hard. The rate of deceleration is astounding on a water landing (from what I’ve read, not experienced), bumpy and loud. So, OK, I’ll let them call it a “hard” landing ;-)

It sure looks like the Pilot put the plane down in the only
place that could save lives on board and on the land.

The fact that it is full of fuel helps it stay afloat.

If the tank were empty, it would provide more buoyancy.

His Katrina histrionics covered all of that except the “where he has to take a job at MSNBC after the crisis” part.

Actually the pilot had to maintain enough speed through the air to keep the plane controllable. Heroics don’t do that.

Once a jet loses power it of course loses speed. You MUST get the nose down to start gaining/maintaining airspeed ... by trading altitude for airspeed.

The execution of the turn without power was not heroic, but it was however VERY SKILLED. It’s easy to stall a jet without power.

Commercial pilots drill this kinda stuff in the simulator. So the crew had an idea of what to do when both engines died. But the way they handled the specifics of his situation ARE/IS very much praiseworthy.

Got to give Airbus some props for building a tough jet.

I don’t know about dogs, but I have read about the constant bird discouragement efforts that were necessary on at the runways at Midway Island, where the Laysan Albatross colony preferred to live on the runway, probably because they were heavy and needed to run into the wind to get airborne. They supposedly provided the name “Gooney Bird” which lives on as the nickname of the immortal Douglas DC-3.

MSNBC interviewed one passenger who said it took 5 minutes for him to get off the plane. It was filling up with water. He had to walk out in water knee-deep in the plane.

Please tell me that passenger wasn't complaining. Jerk should have been thanking God (and the pilots) that he was alive.

If he was to the back of the plane that doesn’t surprise me at all... it takes forever to get off these planes in the best of circumstances and they all had to go forward to the front exit doors.

Did they have to wait for everyone to get their carry-on baggage?

Can’t seem to get that link to work. I put in the time, but nothing happens. I’m sure I am doing something wrong, or don’t have a needed plug in. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
