Let some Guantanamo Bay detainees live in U.S., advocates say

Reporting from Washington -- Human rights advocates are urging the incoming Obama administration to allow some detainees from the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to resettle as U.S. residents as part of any plan to close the controversial facility.

Taking such a step would go beyond plans outlined so far to close the prison and transfer detainees to other countries or to military prisons on the U.S. mainland. But allowing a small number -- perhaps only two or three -- to live freely in the U.S. could help persuade other countries to accept some of them as well.

"If we want European and other countries to feel comfortable taking at least some of the prisoners off American hands, the U.S. will have to show it is OK by taking some itself," said Tom Malinowski, the Washington advocacy director of Human Rights Watch.

President-elect Barack Obama's transition team is considering the option, but a Democratic official said there has been no conclusion that the resettlement option is necessary to Obama's plans.

I agree - put them in liberal suburban neighborhoods...they should be happy to have them as neighbors!

The only place in America they should ever be released is a place with a trapdoor while wearing one of these special neckties.

They are of a class of people known as “the enemy”. You don’t invite them to live in your neighborhood unless you’re pretty sure they are not “the enemy” but rather “friends”.

As for what to do with them, there should be only one standard. Are they still, in our military judgement, a threat to the US? If they are not a threat, give them a plane ticket home and a new suit.

If they are still a threat and will be for the duration of the war, then you can’t release them. You can let some third country hold them for you, or you can continue to hold them in some other location. But you can’t release them.

If in your military judgement they will always be a threat and can never be released ever, then you hang them. Its that simple. This is not a matter for civilian law to handle, its military and its a war issue. If civilian law were adequate to the task, you are not at war. If you are at war it is precisely because civilian law is not adequate to contain the conflict. Thats when the guns and the hanging ropes come out.

That’s the good thing about Libs/Dems. All you gotta do is keep feeding them rope.

Each advocate should sponsor a detainee in their home. They should be legally and fiscally responsible for their actions for 25 years. If they believe in them that much and agree to be responsible, then I say ok.

Not only them, but all of their wives and extended families as well.
This will go over real well with the guys who put their lives on the line to capture them.
We can only hope that our troops are now killing these guys while they have the chance.
