Obamas choice for Treasury secretary disclosed publicly Tuesday that he failed to pay tens of thousands of dollars in federal taxes from 2001 to 2004.
Senate Democrats tried to brush aside the last-minute complication as a minor bump on an otherwise smooth path to confirmation for Timothy Geithner, who has been president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
After the underpayments were detected, Geithner paid back taxes and interest totaling $43,200.

You.. can be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes! You can be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes! You say.. "Steve.. how can I be a millionaire.. and never pay taxes?" First.. get a million dollars. Now.. you say, "Steve.. what do I say to the tax man when he comes to my door and says, 'You.. have never paid taxes'?" Two simple words. Two simple words in the English language: "I forgot!" How many times do we let ourselves get into terrible situations because we don't say "I forgot"? Let's say you're on trial for armed robbery. You say to the judge, "I forgot armed robbery was illegal." Let's suppose he says back to you, "You have committed a foul crime. you have stolen hundreds and thousands of dollars from people at random, and you say, 'I forgot'?" Two simple words: Excuuuuuse me!!"
The lovely Democratic culture of corruption.
"He who hiccups over little things will hiccup over bigger things"!
It used to be that having an illegal alien housekeeper was enought to kill an appointment.
Now, not only can a Democrat have an illegal alien housekeeper, he doesn’t have to pay his income taxes and he will still be appointed.
WHAT A JOKE!
DISGUSTING. So he should be in charge of OUR tax money?
>>>His first clue that his employer didnt pay HIS self-employment taxes was the W-2 he DIDNT get from his supposed employer! He got a 1099 for an independent contractor.
He actually received a W-2. This doesn’t excuse his actions, but it does appear to happen often enough that the Bush IRS made a special ruling for people in his situation.
“For tax purposes, while IMF employees receive W-2’s as employees, they are treated as if they were self-employed. This unusual payroll system commonly creates confusion among U.S. employees of the international organizations like the IMF , who typically are accustomed to having employers withhold federal and state taxes. This problem has been so common that in November 2006 (as supplemented in 2007) the IRS made a taxpayer favorable settlement offer to all U.S. employees of Embassies and International Organizations in order to bring the employees into compliance with their U.S. tax obligations.”
lol-
Get your barf bag ready. Have you read Harry Reid’s response to this news?
If Linda Chavez had to resign because she hired a worker who didn’t pay taxes, then this guy had better be persona non gratas YESTERDAY.
Good news though? Are our guys digging up this stuff on the Obama’s team? Not enough to make me donate to the Republican party again but promising developments?
No such luck.From the article:
The underpayments, according to people familiar with them, involve Geithners income when he was a senior official at the International Monetary Fund and were discovered by Obamas transition team while investigating Geithners background. Obamas staff told senators about the tax issues Dec. 5.
They've known this for over a month.
The secretary of the treasury should be someone who has held a cabinet position and has held an elective office. Obama should have chosen William Cohen, Bruce Babbit, or Richard Riley.
I agree that Rosanna should mention this issue, along with the fact that the district has been the home of corrupt, liberal Democrats Rod Blagojevich and Dan Rostenkowski.
It drives me mad that no one outside of a few conservatives don’t see the blatant hypocrisy of this. JTP got a rectal exam for having the “audacity” to ask The One a real question. The left declared him a bad American because he owed a few k$ in back taxes. Meanwhile, the guy whose going to have the power of a king with OUR money shows that he’s either a liar of completely incompetent. Yet you won’t hear anything but a yawn from the MSM (and most other people).
Prison time for a $34k underpayment resulting from an extremely common error?
Surely you jest.
This is the first case I have seen where a guy who works for the government (not a particularly high paying job) makes an "honest" mistake of failing to pay taxes that are the functional equivalent of the entire income tax burden of a guy making about $80,000 a year over a period of 4 years.
Honest mistake?
Tell that to the jury.
Oh wait, "I forgot" he's a democrat. That's an "honest mistake". There won't even be an indictment.
With all the crooks in Congress, I'm guessing his nomination will be approved unanimously.
I sent an e-mail to the void senator we have here in Virginia, Jim Webb, to vote against his nomination to “show me some CHANGE Jim”. Our newest senator, Mark Warner, doesn't have contact info up on his page yet, or I would have sent one to him too. Please everybody, tell your reps to “show us some change!!”. Use their own words against them; it drives them crazy.
Forgot for four years???!??
That’s a LOT or forgrttin, man!
Hey, we don’t have to follow laws anymore. That’s just old fashioned, the new thing is to ignore taxes, ignore the people, do what you want, and get rewarded for it by a bunch of ignorant voters.
Wrong.
The Secretary of the Treasury should be someone who has worked a real job and had to pay taxes and feed his family without relying on government hand outs or income from taxpayers.
Joe the Plumber should be secretary of the treasury.
