New York activist Al Sharpton is of course the latest to join the Proposition 8 parade. In a speech over the weekend, he questioned why churches that backed the ban on gay marriage aren't focusing on bigger issues such as violence and poverty. From the Southern Voice website:
From the pulpit of Tabernacle Baptist Church on Sunday, Rev. Al Sharpton called out the Mormon Church and other conservative faiths for mobilizing to support Proposition 8 to ban gay marriage in California while refusing to be as involved in any other social concerns.
It amazes me when I looked at California and saw churches that had nothing to say about police brutality, nothing to say when a young black boy was shot while he was wearing police handcuffs, nothing to say when they overturned affirmative action, nothing to say when people were being delegated into poverty, yet they were organizing and mobilizing to stop consenting adults from choosing their life partners, Sharpton told a packed audience on Jan. 11.
There is something immoral and

"As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don't worry about that; that's a temporary situation." -Al Sharpton on Mitt Romney and Mormonism 2007
“Reverend” Al should be aware that the proper focus of Christian Churches should be Jesus Christ.
Homosexuality IS a social woe you “White-Washed Tomb full of dead men’s bones.”
Why is this individual even given the time of day?
When I read this article, I was thinking that Rev. Al would also like to see churches stop talking about abortion (as if they did -the subject comes maybe two or three times a year in my Catholic parish). The sooner Churches stop talking about abortion and gay marriage, the sooner they can focus all of their attention on subjects that Christ never talked about, like government redistribution of wealth. Black liberation theology, and its churches have nothing to do with God. The are a politicial movement. That’s why Barak Obama has no trouble jumping around from church to church and minister to minister. He may be a confused but essentially good person trying to do the right thing (and I choose to believe that he is), but he clearly has no relationship with God. How else could he spend 20 years going to the same church and never hear what was being said.
Sexual immorality is the single greatest cause of poverty and the spread of aids. 1 Thess 4:1-8 relate God’s command against sexual immorality, and states who ever rejects that command has rejected God.
Ask the blond chick.
Sharpston got the roles of ministers/churches confused with politicians/government programs a loooooong time ago!
Liberal = Gray
Conservative = Black and White.
Makes sense to be a conservative minded one IMO.
I'm a minority it appears these days however...
Trust in God, question everyone else.
As long as we are prescribing moral behavior for someone else, how about you, Al, focusing on moral and social woes like ripping black babies from the wombs of their mothers in the name of convenience? How about focusing on black men who refuse to be anything more than a donor? How about focusing on the evil of fostering dependence of your people on the secular god called Government? How about focusing on healing the racial divide in this country? What? You would lose your livelihood? Then don’t lecture someone else or some other organization on their choice of focus, you hypocrite.
Sharpton called out ministers who speak out against politically popular causes, but dont have the courage to live their convictions.
Where are the black ministers speaking about personal responsiblity and liberty to their congregations in New York, Chicago, Detroit and LA?
They're AWOL! They're advocating gun control; marching in state capitols for more money for black neighborhoods, public transportation, public health and welfare.
Sharpton, of all people, has no business advising any church or churches about political activism.
I have two words for this ahole: Tawana Brawley!
Lack of personal conviction is the single greatest cause of sexual immorality and the spread of AIDS because of it.
When Al Sharpton gets the “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor” thing straightened out, he can talk to me about other moral issues.
Sex drive IS human nature. How it fits into the society du jour is interesting at best.
Churches Should Follow Rev. Sharpton’s Advice
NOT!
“focus on social woes not gay marriage” in announcing he would focus on gay marriage??
THANK YOU Graybeard, exactly.
