In what will be a Lincoln-themed inauguration from top to bottom, Obama won't only follow in the footsteps of the former president - he'll also eat like him, it was announced yesterday.

Obama's jampacked Abe-apalooza moved into high gear with an announcement from the Congressional Inaugural Committee that it will hold a luncheon next Tuesday following the swearing-in ceremony that's modeled after foods Lincoln enjoyed.

GM accepted the Fed’s bailout, so I think all taxpayers get free Cadillacs now just as part of our quarterly dividends.

I'm jealous. The '57 Mark II is one of the most gorgeous cars to ever come out of Detroit.

Can I borrow it? ;)

I think he’s saving that for a state visit to Israel.

NY Post: On Saturday, Obama will travel by train from Philadelphia to Washington, DC - part of the route taken by Lincoln during an 1861 trip.

Will he sneak into Washington from Baltimore under cover of darkness? That's what Lincoln did on the way to his inauguration.

In all seriousness, there's an element of foolishness for Obama to draw too many parallels between himself and the great 16th President of the United States. A tremendous amount of bloodletting followed Lincoln's ascension to the presidency. Does Obama wish the country to follow a parallel course? Americans were literally at each other's throats in 1861. Is that what Obama wants to remind the country of in our present era of hardball racial politics. Fort Sumter fell in an act of war in 1861. Is that what Obama intends for the Green Zone in Iraq in 2009?

No president in American history can compare to Abraham Lincoln. He was a wise and brilliant man who achieved true and everlasting greatness. But his first term in office coincides with the most terrible and fearsome years Americans have ever endured. A genuine tribute to Lincoln must recognize that.

Obama cannot -- if he chooses to be honest -- separate Lincoln the Liberator from Lincoln the Civil War President. Lincoln is a symbol of internecine strife, and a man of his own era, not this one.

He was also a Republican (and a former Whig) who was committed to a political philosophy antithetical to most of the principles present day Democrats hold dear.

Obama would be better off letting Lincoln rest in arms of history where he belongs, instead of using him as a cheap political stunt in an age far different from his own.

Lincoln was born in America. I knew President Lincoln. Obama is no Lincoln.

I highly doubt that Obama has actually read anything from Lincoln. Here are a couple of gems:

Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties.

Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another, but let him work diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built.

Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.

We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.

and one for Obama's wife:

I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.

Only about 300 or so made if I recall correctly. I used to drive it and even bought one of those musical horns that play songs, lol.

Been in the garage idle for many years now, need to sell it. Amazing that it had power steering and air conditioning back in the time it was made!

Thanks DC. It looks like a large version of the 50’s T-Bird.
That’s an original color too.

It is pretty in real life too. Not a color that would be used now days I don’t think. Maybe in some mini car.

Agreed...not a color to be used nowadays, except possibly on a very small car.

But, what a beauty she is dressed all in baby blue.

I do not have the stats for the '57, but in '56, the car sold for $10,000, which would be about $75,000 today and about 2,000 were made. It came with a 368 V8, which specifically taken off the production line for hand balancing and other special treatment. BTW, air conditioning was the only factory option. Truly one of the great cars of the 50's.

Also you can probably add to this list of celebrity owners: Elvis ('56), Jayne Mansfield ('57 in pink).

I hope I will be excused for posting this. Lincoln, yes, but off topic. The thread has seemed to end though.

http://www.driverside.com/value-your-car/lincoln-mark_ii_hardtop_coupe-1957-19151-21000-0

ONLY 444 made in 1957 [with some changes]!
http://www.hemmings.com/users/5560/ride/4390.html

they were $10,000. in 1957
http://flickr.com/photos/70626467@N00/204367725/

At the car’s selling price of $10,000, Ford estimated they lost over a thousand dollars per car. At the time, $10,000 was equivalent to the cost of a new Rolls-Royce or more than two top-of-the-line Cadillacs. Compensated for inflation, this figure would be around $70,000 today.

Ultra-high priced cars today are marketed in the $250,000 price range. In 1956, any car marketed at $10,000 was at a very rare price point; it was this high price that doomed the car. Only the very rich could afford one, and scarcely over 3000 MarkII’s were built. About 1300 were sold in the last quarter of 1955 after the car’s October debut at the Paris Motor Show; another 1300 or so in 1956; and 444 in 1957, some with factory-installed air conditioning.

Famous owners included Elvis Presley as well as Frank Sinatra, the Shah of Iran, and a cross section of the richest men in America. The car was featured in a few scenes in the 1956 movie High Society, with Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, and Grace Kelly.
