Boxer basks in Obama limelight: California back from the wilderness

WASHINGTON – Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer kept getting interrupted Monday morning.

While chatting in her Capitol Hill office with nine California reporters about her plans for the new Congress, Boxer got two phone calls during the 90-minute meeting, both from the same man.

It was Barack Obama. She wasn't complaining.

After the calls, Boxer told reporters that she had changed her mind and was leaning toward supporting Obama's request to approve spending the remaining $350 billion from a $700 billion Wall Street rescue plan approved last year.

Boxer said he told her that he would give a television speech to tell Americans that part of the remaining money would be spent on housing, as Boxer had requested.

"The wonderful thing about Barack Obama coming from the Senate is he gets it," Boxer said, adding that the president-elect has been "extremely responsive" to senators.

Her other observation? "California's in this year."

In the past, she said, there was an ABC mantra on Capitol Hill: Anyone But California.

But things have clearly changed, and she hasn't been the only Californian getting phone calls from Obama.

Last week, Obama called Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, to apologize after Feinstein complained she knew nothing in advance of Obama's appointment of Leon Panetta to head the CIA.

And he has tapped three Californians for high-level positions in his administration: Steven Chu, the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as energy secretary; Hilda Solis, a Los Angeles-area Democratic congresswoman, as labor secretary; and Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Nancy Sutley, as head of the White House's Council on Environmental Quality.

Boxer, who heads the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee, often wrangled with the Bush administration over environmental issues.

...and when is this clown up for reelection?

between Feinstein & Boxer, I don't know who I despise the most! You'd think that with the largest state population of conservatives in the USA, we could find someone willing to run for the Senate and WIN...where is Reagan when we reeeely need him!

And to think one nudie bar trip was all it took for many so-called conservatives to switch from Herschensohn to Boxer. The rest is, as they say, history.

Funny you should ask. First, Boxer is up for re-election in 2010, and a very Reagan-esque conservative has already announced he is running against her — Chuck DeVore.

If you’re a Californian, note that Chuck is an Assemblyman from Costa Mesa (Orange County) and is as true-blue a conservative as they come.

Of course, I’m biased as I’ve known him personally for the last ten years.

You’ll find lots of info about Chuck online, as well as Youtube videos.

“If” I'm a Californian?

Yeaaaaaa...for about 30 friggin’ years. LOL

and I've lived in OC for 20 of ‘em...in FV and I've NEVER heard of De Vore...maybe he should try running for congressman before he jumps into trying to run for the Senate...ya know politics is like checkers not chess unless you're a “celebrity”...

Herschensohn was, unfortunately, virtually unknown in northern California.

She will always be Barbara Bouncer to me because of the check scandle of the 1990’s. BTW the smear attack against Hirschensohn was a last minute ploy by the Bouncer campaign. It was never proven that he went to a titty bar. For rats, the facts should never get in the way of a good story.

Well, Kelly, perhaps I can advise you to read the OC Register a bit more carefully. Chuck has become one of the most quoted politicians recently, if the topic is energy or the budget. He has steadfastly opposed Schwarzenegger, which is the sign of a conservative in my book.
