HOUSTON (AP) President George W. Bush told a group of Texas reporters Friday that he regretted immigration policies were not reformed while he was in office.
"I'm very disappointed that it didn't pass," he said in an interview with correspondents from his home state. "I'm very worried about the message that said, 'Republicans are anti-immigrant.'"

So how did Tancredo do in the election?
Pray for W, America and Our Troops
Both you and GWB appear to have trouble comprehending the meaning of the word illegal.
So answer the question. How many farmers are you willing to sacrifice for your Mexican roundup? All of them if they have illegals? Then where you going to get your food to eat after all the farmers are in jail?
What exactly is the penalty for illegally crossing the border? What was the exact amt of the fine Reagan put into the law? Here’s a hint, 0.
If you hated W’s plan, your going to really hate Hussain’s. That’s all boys, get your testosterone fix elsewhere. Out!
Pray for W and Our Troops
There isn’t jack sh*t conservatives can do for the next two years except try to educate people as we get the chance.
That’s my mission, although very few will listen.
He did that. And it cost the GOP control of Congress. It cost the nation trillions in aid to invaders. It cost us a generation of anchor babies that we will be paying for for decades.
What did we gain by it?
cheaper lettuce. /s
Bye bye Whig!
That can't be said here too often.
So many here want to list Roberts and Alito as great Bush decisions, but he didn't want them until the pressure really ramped up on him, for Roberts more privately, and for Alito (the Meir's fiasco) the very pubic dressing down W receieved.
Ummmm.... What conservative candidate did we have? I can't believe you are actually blaming the voters for the failings of the "leader" of the "conservative" party for its own failings.
Immigration was an albatross hung around the GOP’s neck. The perfect wedge issue.
You forget that GWB was elected and served both his terms with exactly the same policy on immigration. It was the same he had as Governor of Texas. How did that cost the GOP control of the Congress?
That was our doing....we vote (or not as many claimed they would before 2006). How different would the last two years be if conservatives had rallied around the Republicans and let them continue control of the House and Senate?
Illegal immigration was never the biggest threat to our country, Democrats were.
'Republicans are anti-immigrant.'
NO WE'RE NOT!
We are anti-ILLEGAL immigrant.
We welcome, respect and admire those who came here legally.
Sheesh! He just had to say it!
Someone needs to slap some sense into him.
I don't think I ever recall posts as ridiculous as yours. What has been destroyed is the power and influence built up over the years for the Republican party. Built up by many thousands of people, but destroyed by Bush and his gang of misguided and deluded Tex-Mex RINOs.
Bush managed to destroy most of the power of the party built up by Reagan and Gingrich and many more.
What makes a party? Voters. The fact that you didn't even have a "conservative" candidate should tell you volumes.
Unfortunately, his “reality” won’t come close to areas where illegals are.
It’s too bad, really...
Think about it for the next two years.
You couldn't support that statement if your life depended on it. Millions of Mexicans have gone home with the downturn? Lol. There have probably been more articles written about a few going home than the actual number that have left. And, they are also still coming North illegally.
But, provide us some support that millions have gone home.
So, Bush took the same stand as the democrats on immigration and it cost him Congress. How did that work out?
Did you REALLY vote for a "new America"? Did your forefather fighting for our freedoms (assuming you are more than first generation American) die to allow millions of invaders the same rights as citizens have?
Does your chest swell with pride when you hear "Press 2 for spanish"?
Did the Constitution ever say we should be an open door?
We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America. Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America. As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico. George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000. |
Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:
In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. My Bush Epiphany By Lawrence Auster
Bush has always been wrong on this issue. Rewarding invaders with citizenship is just plain wrong.
Would you let a housebreaker simply stay in your basement simply because he had the gall to break into your home?
He will see a very different Dallas than the one he left. Reading the newspaper, and watching the local news will be different than what he experiences now. But, what will it matter?? The damage is done.
