Golden Globes deliver second-worst ratings since '95 (Dinosaur Media DeathWatchâ„¢)
Los Angeles Times ^ | January 12, 2009 | Scott Collins

Fancy gowns and teary speeches made a comeback at Sunday's Golden Globes on NBC, but all that couldn't rescue the ceremony's ratings, with the telecast delivering its second-worst numbers since 1995.

The three-hour Globes averaged 14.6 million total viewers, according to early data from Nielsen Media Research. That was a big improvement over last year, when the writers strike led to a stripped-down, one-hour telecast seen by a total of only 6 million viewers.

But the Sunday telecast marked a steep dive from 2007, when the Globes averaged 20 million total viewers -- not to mention as recently as 2004, when the award show was encroaching on Oscar territory with an audience of 26.8 million.

It's possible that last year's interruption may have hurt the Globes. Limited constituencies for the movies nominated this year -- including "The Reader," "Revolutionary Road" and "Slumdog Millionaire" -- probably didn't help, either.

On the bright side, the Globes ranked first in every half-hour the program aired except for the 8:00-8:30 p.m. block, when CBS' "60 Minutes" was artificially inflated due to the runover in some markets from the San Diego Chargers-Pittsburgh Steelers football game.

On Fox, a two-hour special season opener of "24" averaged 12.6 million total viewers, which was slightly higher than the numbers for the series' "Redemption" TV movie that aired back in November and roughly in line with "24's" season averages across its run.

I watched the 2-hour '24' and was somewhat disappointed.

For a minute, I thought was watching Ugly Betty till I realized it wasn't Ugly Betty, but an Ugly Betty lookalike.

The Golden Globes are awards given by the "Hollywood Foreign Press". Those are about 90 people who no one can name, who are critics for foreign papers & magazines no one has ever heard of.

The GGs were the joke of Hollywood (they gave Pia Zadora "Newcomer of the Year") until just a couple of years ago when the Weinstein brothers launched an ad campaign to win Oscars for their Miramax movies by claiming the GGs were precursors to the Academy Awards. Suddenly the GGs were relevant and NBC started airing them in primetime.

So, basically, everyone’s tripping over themselves to give actors awards so they can sell me soap...?

If they spew crap, then why should she think about it critically or let it bother her? Maybe she just enjoys it for what it is, entertainment on the tv for a couple hours.

That’s correct. It’s all about MSM promotion of Hollywood so they can keep their jobs.

All these awards (Oscars, Golden Globe, Emmys) have jumped the shark when they became vehicles for spewing anti-American demagogery. How long will it take for hollywood celebrities to realize that people will real lives and real challenges trying to make this a great country could care absolutely zero about their points of views.

It is sad though to see a once great tradition fall so low (like the Nobel Peace Prize when the awarded it to Yasser the terrorist)

“I watched the 2-hour ‘24’ and was somewhat disappointed.”

I am with you on that. I can not stand Jeneane Garafallo or whatever her name is. I thought the Redemption show in Africa was very good but thought last nights show was only OK.
I am confused though. When did the Presidents son die ?
I do not remember that in the previous Redemption show. Did I miss something ?
As far as The Golden Globes it is interesting to see what those hotties look like in the bright sunlight on the Red Carpet before the show. However, the show itself is UNWATCHABLE and I do not care what any of those people have to say. They are just nice to look at.

When actors, perhaps the least intellectually savvy people on the planet, try to tell me I’m some kind of vile person because I voted for Prop 8 in California, I’m not going to give the businesses that underwrite the program the viewership they crave.

To do so, is to support these prima donna’s national and international outlook at the expense of my own.

I can’t simply look at this as entertainment. It’s much more than that. They know it, or they wouldn’t be shooting their mouths off.

"Benjamin Button" cost $150 million to produce (not including advertising and prints), has brought in $94 million so far and is sinking fast. I predict it will never see black ink.

"Mama Mia" is a hit because of the worldwide box office.

I couldn’t get over the constant references making light of cocaine addiction as if it were a badge of honour. Clint Eastwood sure looked uncomfortable amongst all those freaks.... Masturbatory socialist hollywood types ensuring equitable distribution of backslapping to thier more drug addled brethren. The guy who won best supporting actor died of a drug overdose and Mickey Rourke is an alcoholic cokehead. Clint only ever drank beer, he’s too good a role model...dare not give him any more awards. It was a veritable throng of drug addicted hollywood actors both dead and alive.

So it may not be on the level of “Titanic,” “Lord of the Rings,” but I wouldn’t exactly call it a bomb. It will no doubt top 100 million dollars, which will put it in the range of respectable previous winners like “Gladiator,” “A Beautiful Mind,” and “The Departed”.

Of course, winning itself gives a movie a huge bump, so maybe the 100 million range isn’t a test of much of anything when it comes to Best Picture winners. Maybe the real test of whether it was a hit is to compare it to the grosses of other films released that year. Using this standard, hits like “Forrest Gump” and “Rain Man” really tend to stand out, while respectable grosses like “The Departed” fall by the wayside.

Which is the big reason the Follyweird trash America, prop 8 and anything America.

These awards have little impact here in the USA.

So anti America, pro Gay and anti conservatism remarks are aimed at the Eurotrash nations and the second and third world nations.
