White House reporters for The New York Times predict that the market collapse will force President-elect Barack Obama to abandon for now many of his campaign promises.
If his stimulus plan "doesnt work out, he may very well be a one-term president, said Jeff Zeleny, who covered Obamas campaign. Its hard to imagine that he could be reelected if the economys in the exact same position four years from now.
A lot of the things he said on the campaign trail you can now dispense with, said correspondent Peter Baker. For the moment he has to focus on the economy.
The reporters, gathered at a Sunday afternoon panel at the New York Times Center in New York City, largely concurred with the assessment that turning around the economy now trumps the issues Obama focused on from the stump until the market meltdown in August.
Baker suggested Obama would tackle smaller-scale issues related to his major agenda items as a kind of political down payment on his promises, for now would retreat from even some of his firmest pledges.
Youre not going to see universal health care, I dont think, this year, Baker said. Youre not going to see a cap on carbon emissions, as he has promised, probably, this year.
And for all of his campaign trail talk about collective sacrifice, Baker observed, Obama has seemed reluctant to call for austerity in a challenging economic moment.
He hasnt asked anybody for sacrifice, Baker said. His whole economic package is about giving things to people.

Actually, it could be a two-term Obama: one in the White House--- the other in the Big House...
A one term president? I was hoping for a shorter period in office due to impreachment or resignation. I suppose if we have to put up with him for a full term we’ll survive, but I would prefer not to.
One can only hope.
Heck, the strain of actually working and having to make real decisions just might make him snap.
From your lips to God's ears...
Ping.
As soon as we prove he isn’t even eligible to be President he will lose that second term
No way will he slide by next time without revealing his birth certificate. This stuff will snowball. 0bammy’s best bet is to kill to talk radio otherwise he is a one-termer
Thanks...
Pass it on.....ping
Well, the John Galt investors and entrepreneurs are certainly going to sit and wait until assh*le and his party are out of office.
As soon as the polls indicated that the Obamination and his corrupt party were going to clearly win, the US and world economy totally tanked.
After he completely destroys our security and our military and we suffer another attack worse than 9/11, he’s out and he will drag all his Liberal sleaze cohorts in the Congress with him. They will all have American blood on their hands.
His economic stimulus package won’t have us in the same position in four years. We will be worse off than we are now. These blowhards think they’re the smartest people in the room. Their economic policies are based on lies and wishful thinking.
I can only hope that’s true.
Good riddance to bad rubbish.
I was thinking more like “he’s gonna’ get polio isn’t he”, and serve out his term in a wheelchair.
Take security into your own hands. Buy guns and ammo. If that becomes "difficult" for some reason, make them yourself. You'll really need them then.
