Mayor Bloomberg has begun reaching out to city Republican leaders to gauge whether he could run on the GOP line in his re-election bid this year, several sources told The Post.
The maneuvering began in the past two weeks, and sources said the mayor is expected to try to run on a major-party as well as a third-party line, likely one of his own creation.

Why doesn’t he just say he’s democrat and be done with it?
To: Seven plus One
He is. He was one before switching for convenience in 01. He’s less Republican than the Clintons.

Color me shocked.
Bloomberg can call himself anything he wants, but the GOP would have to be out of their minds to support him.

I just came from a rally attended by several hundred people, all the local politicians and fire officials, to save our Ladder Company. Many of the folks there voted for Mayor Powergrab. But all of us soundly booooooed the SOB.

"Bloomberg can call himself anything he wants, but the GOP would have to be out of their minds to support him." In the big scheme of things, does this really matter? It is New York City we're talking about. It's not like Mikey is going to keep some conservative firebrand from competing for the NYC Mayor's office.
Bloomberg can call himself whatever he wants - anyone with a brain knows what he really is.

Today on Rush:
RUSH: Did you hear me report my secret bit of information from somebody who attended the Republican Senate retreat?
CALLER: Yes. Yes.
RUSH: Whereas they were told, it was demoralizing for them. Don’t be extreme, whatever that means, be moderate, don’t be critical, and remember the needs of northeastern Republicans in the Senate. There aren’t any Republicans from the northeastern in the House, and that’s what’s got them all scared. That’s fine, northeastern Republicans are liberals. Can I give you some names?
CALLER: Who?
RUSH: Mayor of New York.
CALLER: Oh, yeah.
RUSH: Michael Bloomberg, Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe.
CALLER: Arlen Specter.
RUSH: They’re certainly not conservative. So when you have that as your agenda, you’re playing defense. These people are playing defense and the name of the game is offense.

What will count is how many patronage jobs Bloomberg guarantees the GOP establishment. You don’t think pay to play is limited to Chicago, did you.
To: Clintonfatigued
So, of course, that means they will support him!
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
The problem is, there IS no GOP in NY.

He’s a RINO of the first magnitude.. but he also has been donating a lot of money to local Republican politicians in NY, so he’s owed some “favors”.

The NY GOP is trying the get Rudy Giuliani to run for Governor, but he seems more interested in landing a Westwood One talk radio gig. If Rudy does get the talk radio gig, then Bloomberg may try to step in to fill the void. The Dem side may feature a contested primary between Patterson and Cuomo.

Actually there are a few, sort of like the Post Office Republicans in the old South, existing to be appointed local postmaster when the GOP held the presidency. If you ever saw the musical Fiorello, they depicted the party organizing waiing to pick a Republican to lose the election, and to get minority patronage jobs from thje Democrats.
To: Lucius Cornelius Sulla
I have never seen it but it sounds historically accurate.
