Is the EU dependent on Russian gas?

Not really.

Today, Russia is a major supplier to the EU in this domain;

The present conflict actually is one between the Ukraine and Putin Inc. It has little do with EU-Russian affairs.

We EUropeans could always build nuclear plants and choose to buy our gas from Norway (not an EU member although a European country) and other allies of ours instead.

Furthermore, a pipeline transporting gas to the EU from Asian nations south of Russia (through Turkey) is presently under construction.
