In the final half hour of Thursdays CBS Early Show, correspondent Bianca Solorzano reported on an increase in the teen pregnancy rate, using Bristol Palin as an example: "Teen pregnancy was on the RNC platform this year, literally, as Sarah Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, was about to give birth. Jamie Lynne Spears made headlines at 16, not for her acting, but the grown-up, real-life role of becoming a teen mom. These famous faces front a growing problem." A graphic appeared on screen declaring: "Teen Pregnancy: The Growing Crisis."
Later, Solorzano explained: "After more than a decade of progress, experts fear we've been lulled into a false sense of security. And have stopped pouring resources into prevention." A clip of the movie Juno was then played, after which Solorzano exclaimed: "And unlike the comedy 'Juno,' there's nothing funny about the nation's growing number of teenage mothers."
Here is the full transcript of the segment:
8:31AM SEGMENT:
RUSS MITCHELL: We're going to begin this half hour with a story about teen pregnancies on the rise. It is a reversal of recent trends. CBS News correspondent Bianca Solorzano has more.
[GRAPHIC ON SCREEN: 'Teen Pregnancy: The Growing Crisis']
BIANCA SOLORZANO: Teen pregnancy was on the RNC platform this year, literally, as Sarah Palin's 18-year-old daughter, Bristol, was about to give birth. Jamie Lynne Spears made headlines at 16, not for her acting, but the grown-up, real-life role of becoming a teen mom. These famous faces front a growing problem. A new report by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows for the first time in almost 15 years, the number of teen birth rates is on the rise.
BILL ALBERT [NATIONAL TEEN PREGNANCY CAMPAIGN]: We've got a problem nationally, that we've got a problem in nearly every state, and that we have a problem among all racial and ethnic groups.
SOLORZANO: Teen births are up significantly in 26 states. Mississippi now leads the nation with the highest teen pregnancy rate. 68 births for every 1,000 teenage girls. New Mexico and Texas aren't far behind. In comparison, New Hampshire has the nation's lowest rate. 19 births for every 1,000 female teens. After more than a decade of progress, experts fear we've been lulled into a false sense of security. And have stopped pouring resources into prevention.
[CLIP OF MOVIE 'JUNO']
JENNIFER GARNER: Your parents are probably wondering where you are.
ELLEN PAGE: Nah, I mean, I'm already pregnant, so what other kind of shenanigans could I get into?
[END OF CLIP]
SOLORZANO: And unlike the comedy 'Juno,' there's nothing funny about the nation's growing number of teenage mothers. Bianca Solorzano, CBS News, New York.

Um, women and minorities hardest hit?

No Mention of the old and young unmarried whores in Hollywood having babies, Halle Berry, Nicole Richie, Madonna, not to mention a whole handful of Hollywood men with their disgusting girlfriends having the babies.
I see CBS has its priorities straight....tabloid that it is....
Note the engagement tattoo-ring... yeah, looks like he doesn't want to marry her./sarc
Look at how evil and loveless this guy is.../sarc
At least they are getting married and did not murder the baby. Bless them instead of judging them.
Besides they are only doing what their culture and their role models at large have said is ok.
someone should tell bianca illegal aliens are the crisis!
How about this: SHHHHH... How Sarah Palin raises her children is none of your flippin' business. It's between her, her husband, her children and her God.
An 18 year old is an adult under the law. Bristol is no younger than our soon to be president's mother was when she gave birth to him.
It may not be ideal, but the press is merely playing this up for its own purposes. The real face of crisis teen pregnancy is a lot younger than 18.
“hollyweird is the face of teen pregnancy!”
And they berated Dan Quayle when he commented on single mom prenancies in the 1980s. What hypocrits.
and waited until the mommy-bride got her figure back to fit her designer wedding dress before having a wedding
Halle Berry, Nicole Richie, Jamie Spears, Angelina Jolie
It's getting harder for the paparazzi to find a glamour babe of any age in hollywood who gets married first. And them that age out- hire a surrogate or adopt, like
Calista Flockhart, Sheryl Crowe, Meg Ryan
This is what is fed to our teenagers on the big screen the small screen, and the checkout stands
If our “culture”, or “society” or “media” really thinks unwed mothers are skanks and bearing babies or raising them without marriage is a bad thing- they need to stop glamourizing it and lionizing the hollywood “stars” who do it
Out of wedlock births are the problem, not teenage births. There is a difference.
I didn't know Bristol is already registered Republican.*rolleyes*
“SHHHHH...Mommy has an (R) after her name, so it’s okay.”
Exactly. I knew that by venting, I would incur the wrath of those who are promoting Sarah as the second coming of Reagan. She’s a talented, telegenic politician. Maybe she can develop into a formidable candidate. But the “so what” attitude of some. toward this pregnancy, and the cavalier decision to allow the child to be illegitimate, are stunning on a forum like FR. It is the height of hypocrisy.
*pattinghead*
lovely pics, thanks for posting!
BINGO!
Though some would say that modern teens don't seem to be mature enough to handle the responsibility of marriage.
I agree with you about Hollywood being the cause of this. But, I would hope that a person who purports to be a conservative leader would reject this trend, and would have passed her conservative attitudes on to her children.
I’d rather be a teenage mother than a 40 year old with a new born. Just because your young doesn’t mean bad!
Wonderful photos. Thanks!
