'St. Louis Post-Dispatch' Laying Off 39, With 14 in Newsroom (Dinosaur Media DeathWatchâ„¢)

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is laying off 39 employees, including 14 in the newsroom.

The others are in operations, advertising and finance departments.

Publisher Kevin Mowbray said in a story Thursday at the STLtoday.com that the layoffs result from a fall in advertising revenue caused by the recession.

The Post-Dispatch is owned by Davenport, Iowa-based Lee Enterprises, whose stock has declined since it bought Pulitzer Inc. in 2005. Pulitzer previously owned the Post-Dispatch.

The newspaper announced 20 layoffs in September in production, marketing and the newsroom, and 31 layoffs last March — none from the news department.

In September 2007, 60 Post-Dispatch employees took early retirement. And in 2005, about 130 employees accepted buyouts, including 40 in the newsroom.

Report of possible P-I sale surprises papers’ leaders

If they were surprised, it tells me they're too stupid to be 'news' reporters.

Newspapers are laying off people right and left.

What does one do if one is a laid off newspaper employee? No other papers are hiring. Start a blog? Hope for endless unemployment benefits? Teach (that’s a scary thought)? Blame George Bush? Blame global-warming?

We've had an influx of former Minneapolis Star-Tribune workers here, in our rural area. They cheerlead far left issues that all raise property taxes, started a little Free Press and *are working* (for over a year, now) on a local radio station of their own. Some have started small businesses catering to the (formerly) wealthy devotees of Green, organic and pc lifestyles. They write articles, trying to get paid from anywhere. Some saw their 401(k) accounts, heavily invested in the paper's stock, take huge hits. Raising chickens is a new interest for many. Improv and cabaret venues have appeared, but are sparsely attended. Consignment stores and ethnic restaurants come and go.

They are high profile in the recent arrivals community and mostly unknown by the locals.

Larry Flynt, the sultan of porn, is asking for a $5 billion bailout from the Obama crowd. Maybe Kevin can join Larry for a handout. Porn, political/social porn, what’s the difference. Both peddle sleaze.

We have a lady friend, who sobered up and dropped out of the fishwrap business 2 decades ago. She has been warning us about these liars when unemployed going to work for the phoney non profits controlled by liberals. Many will try to set up their own left wing blog sites which will attract other worthless freeloading liberals as long as the site is free.

Many will move back in with their elderly parents to use drugs, spend hours on DU and supposedly writing the next great book exposing the evil Nixon, Reagan and of course, Bush/Hitler/Cheney.

One ex scribbler I know was sure he’d “get a grant” to write something about something...

During the Clintoonian days, that was done often by the “esteemed former members of the press”!

We need to watch the Zer0’s bailout bills when he becomes FDRII. He will probably try to slip a few billion into grants for those who enabled the greatest Fraud in America to become our new Supreme Leader. This may be done via phoney non profits ginned up to employ these worthless pos’s.

I definitely should have thought about the moving in with the parents and writing the next great book.

This could be interesting for Florida. I bet a lot of parents have retired there. Could be a huge influx of unemployed writers mooching off their parents and soaking up the Florida rays.
