ST. LOUIS - Michigan saw the nation's most outbound migration in 2008, with 67.1 percent of interstate moves heading out, according to a migration study released Wednesday.
It marked the third straight year that Michigan, hard hit by the economy and layoffs in the auto industry, has seen the highest percentage of outbound migration.
Americans continue to head west - and to the Mid-Atlantic states - while many are leaving the Great Lakes region behind.
St. Louis-based United Van Lines, the nation's largest mover of household goods, has been tracking moves since 1977. Company vice president Carl Walter said the study in the past has accurately reflected trends in migration. He said real estate firms, financial institutions and others use United's data for planning and analysis.
The 2008 study looked at 198,962 interstate household moves in the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia.
In fact, the District of Columbia tops the list for inbound migration, with 62.1 percent of interstate moves going in. Nevada was second (59.2 percent), followed by North Carolina (58.2 percent), Alabama (58.1 percent) and Wyoming (57.8 percent).
Most of the states with high percentages of inbound moves were in the Mid-Atlantic (South Carolina and Delaware also ranked high) or the West (South Dakota, Oregon and Colorado also ranked high).
North Dakota (58.9 percent), New Jersey (58.7 percent), Pennsylvania (58 percent) and Rhode Island (57.8 percent) also were in the top five in the percentage of outbound movers. Several other states with high rates of outbound moves were in the Great Lakes region, including Illinois, Indiana, New York, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Most states in the South saw more inbound than outbound moves in 2008. Only two states in the Northeast - Vermont and Massachusetts - had more inbound than outbound migration.
Missouri reversed a 13-year trend of outbound moves, with 51.4 percent of 2008 moves coming into the Show-Me State. In Illinois, 57.2 percent of moves were outbound, the sixth-highest total. Kansas saw 50.4 percent of interstate moves inbound.
What’s really the surprise is that a third of moves are INTO Michigan. Must be self-flagellating liberal loons moving in...
It is news because with global warming, Michigan is suppose to become a tropical paradise that vacationers from florida will flock to when global warming turns the pitiful portions of the state not submerged by the melting ice caps into desert.
What sucks is these idiots move to Red states in the South, SW and West and they turn them into bankrupt Lib sewers. Look at the states California Libs ruined. NC is becoming NJ south. NH has been ruined. S. Florida ruined. Colorado has almost been ruined. AZ is becoming crap with Juan McCcain.

I love to point out to them the irony that they had to flee NY exactly because of the policies they love so much, but it never seems to sink in.
I’ll make this comment and analysis...by 2030...the population currently of Michigan...will be half of what it is today. There will be entire regions of space within forty miles of Detroit that are simply empty (you can stand on a street corner and look as far as the eye can see...and not see a human).
And they will tax more. err....raise fees. Seems that is not a tax. This state is screwed. I choose to remain because I cannot give up my weekend vacations to my cottage. As my entire industry leaves, I’ll be golden in 2013 when the economy comes back. At least I can float on the water and there will be less people to get in my way.

Interesting, I lived in the state from 1987 through 1991 before escaping to the South. Mind you not as far as Dixie but far enough to be safe from the effects of Michigan. Only problem is, here in OHIO, I am not so sure we are on the same path as Michigan only at a slower rate....
Michigan has lots of beaches, someday it will be a tropical paradise, but not for a few thousdand years the way things are going.
Odd. they list New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York as having among the highest outbound proportions. They also list Delaware as not being mid-Atlantic. Then they say that the Mid-Atlantic has the highest inbound proportion. These states make up the Mid-Atlantic states!
(Some people regard Maryland as Mid-Atlantic, others regard it as having been a southern colony, along with VA, NC, SC, and GA.)

Geographic illiteracy on the part of the author, who just looked at a map and decided that states midway down the US Atlantic coast were “Mid-Atlantic.”
