WASHINGTON (CNN)Arizona Senator John McCain is adopting a major 2008 campaign slogan for a new political action committee designed to support not only his own planned re-election run in two years, but help him put his stamp on the rebuilding of the Republican Party.
The formation of the Country First PAC is to be announced Wednesday, two sources familiar with the plans tell CNN.
One of the sources called it the first official step of the GOP Senators re-election campaign. McCain made it clear not long after losing the presidential election that he intended to seek re-election to the Senate in 2010.
The second source said that in addition to supporting his own political ambitions, Country First would be a financial vehicle to help McCain help define the future of the GOP by recruiting candidates and driving the agenda.

Retiring McCain is job #1 for me in the next two years. He needs to go back to his family and enjoy that barbecue he uses to make himself appear average.
One reason we are not so happy with your hero, McCain, is that he will fall all over himself to compromise with the “villain” coming into power January 20.
And, he will drag the rest of the GOP with him into the muck of surrender to the Dims.
That’s why we are up in arms. That’s why all good conservatives wish McCain would sit down and shut up.
I will NOT support Sen. John McCain. I am supporting Gov. Sarah Palin.
Join www.TeamSarah.org and let’s get a true Republican in the White House. Oh yeah, she’s also a woman who smiles a lot and who inspires crowds . . . larger crowds than McCain could draw, ever.
Who’s running against him in AZ in 2010?
Sigh. I think some RINO Freepers have me in their sights.
Perhaps a lot of Freepers really dislike McCain. Only time...and the 2010 elections...will tell.
he know, that’s the point!
After this last election and hearing all the slamming of him by the right on this so called independent group it makes sense for him to retire and any sensible person not to go into politics.
Lets just see how screwed up this country gets now with lefty Obama in place and then swing back to the far right. We will never see an independent such as McCain.
He is flawed like all of us but with alot of effort to be selfless for country but for you all to slam him just shows how balanced you are not.
Sorry but this election’s result has disappointed me in half our country and now reading you all disappointed on how fast you jump ship again so disappointed on the large majority again.
So I will stay on vacation too, so you all can crap up this blog with your negativity against a man who has fault for you, how many of you fault our country outside of your computer or couch?
this a good forum since it is very informative but please, this not independent, very right.
I am independent and the way everyone is slamming McCain and my reply shows how far right and not open minded.
Good luck mate, hope you and every slammer here finds what they are looking for, me I find how our country is torn apart will only make our true enemies stronger.
Thank you for your respectful and honest reply.
This is the kind of dialogue I hope to get and read and not the simple quick and easy bashing seen by most on these threads.
He has flaws and not perfect but I see more honest attempts to do whats right weather I agree and that is what I respect more then doing just what one party or what will further personal agenda.
take care mate
You "my friend" are barking up the wrong tree with your disappointment in participants in this forum and their dislike of John McCain.
Like you, I was incredibly disappointed in this past presidential election. However, please know that for me John McCain was the lesser of two evils. He was a consolation prize of the bitterest sort.
As a registered Republican, he has "faulted" me as you state. As an American, he has "faulted" me. And as someone who calls himself a conservative, he has most definitely "faulted" me. On all three fronts, the only time John McCain has "fought" for me was on the battle field in Vietnam and during his unfortunate and unimaginable capture. However, during his tenure in the U.S. Senate, there were many times that John McCain demonstrated he was only simply fighting for himself. From campaign finance reform, the illegal amnesty nightmare, support for (imaginary) man-made global warming, attempting to shut down free speech on the Internet, limiting gun ownership, and dozens of other issues where John McCain has went against his party, against his country, and against his constituents to support his own personal political agenda. An agenda made possible by the leftist donor roll that has repeatedly given John McCain the lifelong honor of serving in the U.S. Senate.
I can sincerely appreciate your appreciation for John McCain as an honorable serviceman in the U.S. military, but you need to recognize that people on this and every other conservative and Republican forum on the Internet include links to evidence such as this: as a means to inform you of John McCain's RECORD and not his rhetoric. This isn't hateful. This isn't mean. This isn't a smear. This is John McCain's record.
Furthermore, John McCain was the Republican nominee in 2008 because of much of the same money that funded Barack Obama. Add to that open primaries in the GOP and a media who only likes John McCain because he bashes his fellow Republicans (like he did with Sarah Palin on the David Letterman Show after the election, if you remember), and you have the GOP candidate. Not many Republicans or conservatives were happy about this. Not because they are hateful or mean or like Obama, but because John McCain has consistently fought only for himself and not represented his party or his constituency.
Finally, I "fault" John McCain because I "fought" for him all fall. I fought for him once he brought on Palin. I fought for him from my computer. I fought for him from my couch. When that got old, I fought for him on the road. I fought for him in a battleground state 5 states away from me. I fought for him making over 10,000 phone calls for the campaign. I fought for him by giving him my money in donations. I fought for him by fundraising for him and recruiting dozens of campaign volunteers. I fought for him by walking door-to-door in the 20 degree Ohio weather. I fought for him by standing outside at rallies with McCain/Palin signs. I fought for him by starting a blog to get my 250 friends and associates to vote him him over Obama, no matter how much pride they had to swallow to do it. I fought for him by doing media interviews in his support.
You "my friend" have no idea how much I fought for John McCain. And do you know what I got in return? What the Republican party got in return? What conservatives got in return? What our country got in return?
We all got screwed. We all got screwed because he's back to his same old crap - dissing Sarah Palin to the media, calling for an illegal immigrant bill, seeking to further campaign finance reform, and starting his own PAC so he can milk money from milquetoast moderates.
You want real disappointment? Those interested in blindly supporting John McCain after November 4, 2008 truly disappoint me.
I noticed he was back with Russ Feingold today in his little presser.
Clearly you do not live in Arizona. If you did you would not be defending McCain.
I am afraid mullinjf is not being honest when he says he is thankful for honest, respectful dialogue. Nor is he interested in educating himself on John McCain’s actual record. I gave him that opportunity without any insult or malice and he ignored it. Then he came back and threw baseless insults at everyone who posts here. IOWs he acted just like McCain does. They both lack integrity of character and don’t deserve further consideration for their opinions.
I don’t remember the name, but there was a Freeper before the election bemoaning posts saying, “I’m voting for Sarah, not McCain.” He said, “I’m voting in *spite* of Sarah. McCain had me at hello.” Puke!
