Vicar takes down crucifixion sculpture 'because it's a scary depiction of suffering' A vicar has removed a sculpture of the crucifixion from the front of his church because it was a 'horrifying depiction of pain and suffering' that was scaring off worshippers. Rev Ewen Souter said the traditional Christian symbol was frightening children and that it would be replaced with a modern, stainless steel cross. Some of the congregation have reacted angrily to the decision, saying it is another blow to Christian tradition. The sculpture of Jesus Christ being crucified has been removed from the front of St John's Church because it was 'too horrifying' One long-standing member of the church, who asked not to be named, said: 'The crucifix is the oldest and most famous symbol of the Christian church. 'Pulling it down and putting up something that would look more at home on the side of a flashy modern shopping centre is not the way to get more bums on seats. 'Next they'll be ripping out the pews and putting sofas in their place, or throwing out all the Bibles and replacing them with laptops. It's just not right.' Rev Souter said today: 'The crucifix expressed suffering, torment, pain and anguish. It was a scary image, particularly for children. 'Parents didn't want to walk past it with their kids, because they found it so horrifying. 'It wasn't a suitable image for the outside of a church wanting to welcome worshippers. In fact, it was a real put-off.

I have to admit it’s one of the very “Catholic” verses in the Bible that I like to quote.

If the Vicar is so offended by Christ maybe he should find another religion or no religion.

Respect for the 2nd commandment would be a better reason...

The Church of England has been reduced to a caricature! Indeed, their empty churches are being purchased by Moslems and used as British madrassas and mosques. This is the inexorable end of Protestantism and its 1001 fissures.

Christianity to become more inclusive. The vicar will replace the symbol of the crucifixion with this:

Maybe I'm missing something, but aren't concepts like:
"...He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, He suffered and was buried, and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven..."
central to the whole point of Christianity???? I mean, that's what I was taught...

Sure crucifixion is horrifying, painful, terrible, disturbing. THAT'S THE POINT. Christ died that we might be saved. Hello???

To remove the crucifixion from a place of Christian worship is to deny one of the central mysteries and premises of Christian belief.

I find that unacceptable.

"more oppressive than I have words to describe"

And how do you think Our Lord felt? Was He not hot? Was He not thirsty? Was He not uncomfortable?

I remember when the third person of the Trinity was changed from Holy Ghost to Holy Spirit. Our catechist claimed children were afraid of ghosts, so "spirit" was better. Funny, I think kids had a lot less to be afraid of 40 years ago than today.

Point made, I think the subject crucifix was a deliberately hideous Modernist monstrosity and I am glad they took it down.

You need to spend some time carefully reading St. Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians.
