Selection vs. Election in the Republican Party
GOP USA ^ | January 6, 2009 | Bobby Eberle

In just a few weeks, the members of the Republican National Committee will meet to elect a new chairman. What's significant about this election is that unlike the "selections" of the past where the president has dictated his choice for RNC Chairman, this time a real election is taking place.

The importance of this election cannot be overstated. The Republican Party now must assume the role of the "loyal opposition." The key is that it must truly be the opposition to the Democrats' liberal agenda of higher taxes, bigger government, and less freedom. If the Republican Party does not distinguish itself as the party of lower taxes, smaller government, and more freedom, then the election results of 2006 and 2008 will continue.

The RNC Chairman Debate was hosted by Grover Norquist and his organization, Americans for Tax Reform. According to Grover, despite the fact that the debate flew under the radar of most people, even most grassroots activists, the debate had over 600 people in attendance and distributed around 70 press credentials......

The key to keep in mind is that Republicans now have an opportunity to change the direction of the party. When speaking of a "loyal opposition," it's easy to do that when the Democrats are in charge. What about when Republicans run the show but are not adhering to conservative principles? It is vital for the party to speak up!

We saw no action from the Republican National Committee during the eight years of President Bush that stood up for conservative values when Republicans were pushing legislation and policies that were completely opposite of what we stand for. This is why the "selection" of a rubber-stamp chairman leads to an ineffective party. The Republican Party, whether it be at the national, state, or local level should always speak out and hold Republican officials accountable to the platform and the constituencies they serve.

When Republicans govern conservatively, America responds. It's only when Republicans try to water-down their philosophy and act like Democrats that we lose. The last eight years should be an example to all. From a party perspective, the next leadership must not only let America know what the Democrats are doing, it must also hold Republicans accountable. Otherwise, the conservative base and any chance to govern will be lost.

Personally, I’d like to think that is the case, but I would think Rick Santorum, George Allen and J.D. Hayworth would have an argument with that statement.

Personally, I’d be happy to see the GOP move away from a primary system for selecting its Presidential candidates, and more back to a more caucus-style system, perhaps governed at the county level in each state. Let local county activists and interested party members decide who they want, and then have that weighted for population of registered Republicans in the county and the state as a whole.

Every member of the RNC Leadership should be swept from office, their suits torn from them, and they should be put outside for the trash pickup 3 days early.

Yes, well stated. We lost this TOTALLY when Bush took over. Conservative leadership vanished. Conservative principles vanished. No more RINOs. And now we have the Bush family trying to push Jeb onto the Republican scene — God help us — no more Bush RINOs -— no more illegal-loving liberal wannabes. The party need staunch conservative leadership and a return to solid AMERICAN VALUES that hold the law, the Constitution, our soverignty, and the RIGHTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL above all else, including SELF EMPOWERMENT.

I don't know about the others, but Rick Santorum committed political suicide by publically backing (along with Pres Bush) the liberal Arlen Specter against a real conservative (Pat Toomey) in the Pennsylvania Senate race.
