UPDATED - ALERT - Frightening Text Messages Being Forwarded Around NY Jews January 2, 2009 3:00PM EST: [UPDATE BELOW] With the situation in Gaza deteriorating by the day, and anti-semitism rampant around the world, thousands of NY Jews were frightened upon receiving the following text message which has been going around on Friday afternoon:
“A Jewish woman gave a tip to a Muslim taxi driver and out of appreciation he warned her not to go to Manhattan next week Wednesday.”
YWN has reached out to high-ranking members of the NYPD, and have stated that although they received the same text message, “there are no credible threats to be concerned about - and don’t even know where this text message originated from”.
The only message that they do have for the public is the same message that they have been saying since 9/11. That message is “always be aware of your surroundings, be vigilant, and if you see anything suspicious contact the police department immediately to report what you have seen”.
UPDATE 3:50PM EST: YWN has just spoken with NYS Assemblyman Dov Hikind who tells us that he has received various reports regarding this ‘threat’ and has personally contacted the FBI who is currently investigating them.
He thanked YWN for our alert to calm the public, and echoed the call for calm and vigilance at anytime and any location. “If you see something, say something,” Hikind said.
“The FBI and the NYPD take these types of threats very seriously, and investigate them thoroughly to ensure the safety of the public.”

which Islamic organization will try to fill those slots?

You’re right. The week isn’t over. It’s best to be aware of potential threats.
Re the cab drivers. If there is anyone who knows what’s going on in a city it’s the cab drivers. Not every one, of course, but in general a cabbie knows when something is about to happen. That doesn’t mean he’s going to let any passengers in on the information.
My friend in Miami said that a taxi driver told him to wear a heavy coat tomorrow. Everybody should watch out for snow.

I left the office one evening and while crossing Madison Ave. a cab turned off 23rd and headed my way. I had my briefcase (mirror finish) in my left hand and as the cab approached I flipped the case up and caught his headlights in the (mirror finish) briefcase and racked the light over his eyes.
I continued to cross Madison as the cab slowed to a halt, the cabbie (Sikh not Muslim) stopped the cab, yelled out the window, gave me the finger, rubbed his eyes and then drove off. Still damn funny.

I contacted several of my Jewish friends that live in major cities. One of them replied and told me security is stepped-up - 24/7, armed, and large at her synagogue in Atlanta. They’re not messing around with serious security these days.

I don’t know - maybe it’s just because I’m a country bumpkin and not a high powered type A personality suit wearing briefcase wielding east coast executive, but pre-emptively blinding a driver heading towards pedestrians on a busy city street seems aggressive and dangerous. But maybe there are different standards of behavior in NYC.
