UPDATED - ALERT - Frightening Text Messages Being Forwarded Around NY Jews January 2, 2009 3:00PM EST: [UPDATE BELOW] With the situation in Gaza deteriorating by the day, and anti-semitism rampant around the world, thousands of NY Jews were frightened upon receiving the following text message which has been going around on Friday afternoon:
“A Jewish woman gave a tip to a Muslim taxi driver and out of appreciation he warned her not to go to Manhattan next week Wednesday.”
YWN has reached out to high-ranking members of the NYPD, and have stated that although they received the same text message, “there are no credible threats to be concerned about - and don’t even know where this text message originated from”.
The only message that they do have for the public is the same message that they have been saying since 9/11. That message is “always be aware of your surroundings, be vigilant, and if you see anything suspicious contact the police department immediately to report what you have seen”.
UPDATE 3:50PM EST: YWN has just spoken with NYS Assemblyman Dov Hikind who tells us that he has received various reports regarding this ‘threat’ and has personally contacted the FBI who is currently investigating them.
He thanked YWN for our alert to calm the public, and echoed the call for calm and vigilance at anytime and any location. “If you see something, say something,” Hikind said.
“The FBI and the NYPD take these types of threats very seriously, and investigate them thoroughly to ensure the safety of the public.”
May Hashem protect us from no harm - no matter where in the world we are located.

What you say is quite true for a bacterial contamination. Algae is a different matter altogether.
Here in the Waitakere Ranges (NZ) our water is Chlorinated, just like yours. It is also amongst the purest tap water in the world (it has won awards internationally). Nearly chemically pure.
If you bottle it and leave it in the sun, in a few months it will begin to grow algae.
Algae needs only sunlight to make its own food.
Your water in NYC is highly unlikely to be as clean as ours. So I would not dismiss out-of-hand that algae could grow in your bottled tap water in a matter of a few days, if you left it in the sunlight.
That’s the price you pay for living in the Big City.

This is also probably correct. You see, bottled water is often only processed and filtered to “Food Grade”: very clean compared with, say, puddle-water or rain-water.
Water from most civilized city systems is usually processed to “Drinking Water Grade”: which is a much higher standard than “Food Grade”. I believe it is an order of magnitude cleaner (I stand to be corrected on that).
MORAL OF THE STORY: People who buy bottled water are mugs. They are paying their left nut for an inferior product.
I have no difficulty believing that bottled water would go “off” if left in the back of a pickup truck. None at all.

Some may think this is a hoax. I pray nothing happens. A simple “Be aware of your surroundings” hurts no one.

Yes, green plants use photosynthesis to grow, however, algae still follow the rules when it comes to reproduction.
There MUST be a source of carbohydrates and trace minerals.
C H O P K N S Ca and Fe are the basic building blocks of life.
Take away any one of them and cells, both plant and animal, cannot survive.
Algae may grow to a very low extant as some cells die, some others may use the now free materials but after a short time, senescence will take place and further growth is not possible. You will not get a freakin’ algal bloom in a sealed container!
