The problem is in the Christian community, that the calling of parents to teach their children (which includes schooling), which is Biblical and which is not the function of government in the Bible, has been ignored. The cost of paying double for Christian day schools plus also paying for the government system (with no benefit) is a heavy sacrifice. Home schooling, an additional option, calls for the same sacrifices in another way, more time than money.
Both Christian day schools and home schooling will be under further attack under the Obamination administration.
I have come to realize this is the biggest failure of the conservative movement of the last 30 years...allowing the liberals to dominate education EVEN IN CONSERVATIVE STATES.
I've been privileged to serve on the board of a Christian day school for five years, three of them as chairman.
There is no question that many Christian families who would choose this type of school do not do so because of the cost.
One of the obstacles to external fundraising is conflict and division among local churches. In my area, no single church is large or wealthy enough to support a denominational school. While a nondenominational school can in theory overcome this problem, there are always objectors, in every denomination, that the school is "too Christian", or "not Christian enough", or, inevitably, "not 'really' Christian".
While these battles go on, many children are lost.
Boy I WISH there was, like, an all time must read section here. This thread is very important. There are SO many people here at FR even who simply ignore the problem or justify sending their kids to PS that how can we possibly hopr the average person will care?
Forget the money. It is the confiscation of our CHILDREN that should have us up in arms!
