Congress faces historic challenges (all of their own making.. Oh, the irony of it all)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democrats will pack greater clout when the new Congress convenes on Tuesday but they face enormous expectations from voters as they grapple with two wars, a financial crisis and record budget deficits.

Lawmakers begin work 14 days before Barack Obama is sworn in as president. When he takes the oath on January 20, Democrats will control the White House and Congress for the first time in 14 years.

Having rolled to victory in the November election with a promise of change after eight turbulent years under Republican President George W. Bush, Democrats need to produce results.

Their top priority will be approval of a mix of middle-class tax cuts and emergency spending they hope will prime an economy that has been shrinking for more than a year.

This package could end up costing around $775 billion.

The Democratic-led Senate plans to move quickly to confirm Obama's Cabinet nominees, who include Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York as secretary of state and New York Federal Reserve chief Timothy Geithner as secretary of the treasury.

Other Democratic promises include: withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq and redeploying many of them in Afghanistan; expanding health care; bolstering regulation of the financial industry and developing alternative energy sources while curbing pollution that contributes to global warming.

"The 111th Congress will hit the ground running in January with an ambitious schedule," House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote in an open letter to Democratic colleagues.

I predict..

What put them in power will now devour them.

The party that stole elections, couldn't spell corruption much less resist getting caught up in it, that lies like it is second nature, is now in control.

Sit back and enjoy the show.

I’d bet Pelosi/Reid already have dozens of pieces of legislation, put together in the last month or so, ready for votes and Obama’s signature.

And I predict that the MSM and such powers will insulate them entirely, and re educate the population about global warming, immigration, a smaller military, less influence, and the need to have less and pay more. - much more

Watch.

Now, who will they blame?

They are going to pour about 1 Trillion dollars into “infrastructure” and increasing the size of the government.

When this doesn’t work the media will claim Zero “saved millions of jobs.”

Uhhh...I think that would be 16 years (since 1992) - Dems lost the House in '94.

“re educate” you say?

You hit it perfectly. The dummies will need to have refresher courses every day. Propaganda cannot lose its edge or it’s effectiveness diminishes.

Right. In 1995 the GOP came in with Newt, and Clinton was President -- 14 years ago.

Same speech as 2006:

“The election of 2006 was a call to change - not merely to change the control of Congress, but for a new direction for our country. Nowhere were the American people more clear about the need for a new direction than in Iraq. ...

“The American people also spoke clearly for a new direction here at home - they desire a new vision, a new America, built on the values that made our country great.

“Our Founders envisioned a new America driven by optimism, opportunity, and courage. So confident were they in the new America they were advancing, they put on the great seal of the United States, ‘novus ordo seclorum’ - a new order for the ages. They envisioned America as a just and good place, as a fair and efficient society, as a source of hope and opportunity for all. . . .

“Now it is our responsibility to carry forth that vision of a new America.

“A new America with a vibrant and strengthened middle class for whom college is affordable, health care accessible, and retirement secure.

“A new America that declares our energy independence, promotes domestic sources of renewable energy, and combats climate change. . . .

“The American people told us in the election that they expect us to work together for fiscal responsibility, with the highest ethical standards and civility.

“After years of historic deficits, this new Congress will commit itself to a higher standard: pay as you go, no new deficit spending. Our new America will provide unlimited opportunity for future generations, not burden them with mountains of debt.

“In order to achieve a new America, we must return this House to the American people. So our first order of business is passing the toughest ethics reform in history. This new Congress doesn’t have two years or 100 days to renew itself.”

More hope and change, more of the same.

All the people who will no longer afford to drive on that “infrastructure” because energy prices will be so high by the time 0’s socialist policies kick in.

The GOP wasn’t much better than the ‘Rats the last half of those 14 years. The Contract with America was the high water mark.

It’s a real drag for Obama and his Dems. All the money got spent before Obama was even sworn in. What’s left for them, scrapping the bottom of the barrel?

This could cost 775 billion dollars? I thought congress had already approved 700 billion. What’s another 75 billion gonna’ matter?

And of course, they can blame Bush for the next 20 years and, sadly, over 60 million people will believe them.
