"History always makes a sharp turn in Washington when a new American President takes the oath of office, and so it will once again on January 20, 2009. There will be new Cabinet members, a new Congress, a new foreign policy, a new style in the East Wing, new embarrassing relatives (if the past is any guide), and new first friends."

"The President of the United States is one of the world's most public figures, yet the power and tradition of the office veil his life in a tightly controlled, highly protected enclave (above, in Benin) that few outsiders ever see."

B Hussein Obama should be embarassed: his aunt is an illegal living in the Boston projects and he lets his half-brother in Kenya live in the meanest Third World poverty.

Yep Osama is a real class person!!!!!!!!
Why is this person who writes for National Geographic doing an article on the President of the US?
Yeah, I got 6 right. LOL
Because the US presidency is suddenly important to these godless America-haters. Just somethin' blowin' in the wind, I guess. That's the answer, my friend.
The article seems to emphasize the transitory nature of the presidency and of the occupancy of the White House. It's an interesting article.
freekitty,
I don't know. The National Geographic is a magazine of geography, which includes American history. It certainly has covered past Presidents and the history of the White House itself. However, I haven't seen a pre-Inaugural issue like this one before.
Was there a similar article in the January 2001 edition, when George W. Bush began his Presidency? Or the January 1993 edition, when Bill Clinton began his Presidency? Would anyone here be able to check?
The tone of this article strikes me as very strange. I'll list the points that jump out at me:
1. The "new President" is not mentioned by name.
2. The article stresses the solemnity of the Presidential office.
3. The article stresses the security of the Presidential office.
4. The article stresses the importance of the Presidential office.
5. The article seems almost to be an introduction to "outsiders" who are unfamiliar with what "U.S. President" means.
All of these points, taken together, seem to be saying: "Pay attention! U.S. citizens and people of the world, pay attention!"
Your thoughts?
The new president isn’t mentioned by name because the article is not about any one president; it’s about the office, the White House, and the staff that keeps both running. (?) That’s how I read it anyway. I want to go back and access some more photos.
Seven out of 10 correct! But some of those answers were pure guesswork. Buchanan’s neice!? A hippo in the White House?
Seven out of ten correct here too. I guessed that Thomas Jefferson invented the baseball glove; that man was always up to something. Incorrect, though.
Only six of ten. Time to go back to school.
Oh wait....they don’t teach history in the schools any longer.
LOL Maybe I should read the article?
LOL It’s sort of like a presidential trivia game. Fun though, isn’t it?
Read the article and definitely check out the photos!
It's about time there was a ferret in the White House. (I understand they're legal in D.C.) But they'd have a heck of a time keeping the critter out of every nook and cranny.
Democrats couldnt get elected without the womans vote..
I liked the part about the bear cubs that Lewis and Clark gave Jefferson. They also sent him a prairie dog at some point (I think they were still exploring at the time), but it died.
BUMP
