But the Fuehrer has been given centre stage by the next European City of Culture.
Liverpool naturally highlighted its connections to the Beatles, its most famous sons, when it became City of Culture in 2008.
But the Austrian city of Linz, with no lederhosen version of the Fab Four to exploit, has instead decided to showcase the works of the architect of the Third Reich.
The Nazi leader spent nine years of his childhood in the city which he loved so much he intended to make it the location for a magnificent five star Adolf Hitler Hotel. He had also proposed building a 162-metre high bell tower in Linz to house the remains of his parents.
Hitler also planned to make Linz one of the five model "Fuehrer Cities" of the Third Reich. The "Fuehrer Museum" alone would have taken up a building 1,100 metres long. Around 16 million works of art were to be housed there, the vast majority taken from private Jewish collections.
The municipal leaders of the Linz, buoyed by securing the city of culture accolade which can generate millions of pounds in tourism revenue, have decided to exploit rather than ignore their most infamous son's associations with the City.
Locals and tourists are now being invited to explore Nazi remnants throughout town. Armed with an audio guide, they can listen to footage of survivors being led through a residential area and a former underground aircraft factory that were part of the Mauthausen/Gusen concentration camp complex.
One exhibition is entitled "The cultural capital of the Fuehrer," and documents his plans to turn Linz into an artistic centre to rival Paris, Vienna and Berlin.
There will also be trips to a factory, built during the war after it was dismantled ion the occupied Czechoslovakia, which was named after

Austrians are creepy.
LOL! Not all of them are, but I agree that some of them have some strange ideas. I suppose with a tough economy if Linz does well with their Hitler museum we'll probably see them sprout up in the USA, too.
“Austrians are creepy.”
Austria is too close to the Vatican. Northern Europe is a lot saner.
FYI
Aww, bigotry is a lot more fun for everyone when you just come right out and say what you mean. So what are you trying to say?
Why does this not surprise me? A country who still gives old Nazis a place to hide even when there are demands for their extradition, is the perfect place for more Hitler glorification.
Naw, I think it's more fun to watch cowards try to wiggle out of their own statements.
following orders!
Russia thinking Stalin was the third greatest Russian of all time.
Austria honoring the one person from there they should be the most ashamed of.
This is not a good sign folks. History really DOES repeat itself.
There are many things about today that look like 1930—I fear for the world and its not because of Global Warming! What we do not learn from history repeats itself. Hitler needs to be remembered least we forget how terrible he was for the world.

Betcha he/she won't come back - Drive-By postings, you know. Especially the self-righteous Catholic-bashers on FR.
What is this “City of Culture” crap, anyway? Yet another way to waste taxpayer money on stuff people don’t care about, I’ll bet.
“Austrians are creepy.”
Maybe now, but lately I’ve become too obsessed with intellectual luminaries from Austria’s past to write them off altogether. Too bad they couldn’t waste money on exhibits celebrating Karl Popper, Menger, Boehm-Bawerk, Von Mises, Schumpeter, and Hayek.
I am not taking that bet.
Ahhh,,, but can they ever Waltz!
The famous fin-de-siecle Vieneese view of their future, “situation hopeless but not serious” seems as good today.
You forgot Falco?
