It's the Senate for Bennet [Colorado]
Rocky Mountain News ^ | January 2, 2009 | Lynn Bartels

Posted on 01/02/2009 9:26:21 AM PST by george76

Denver Public Schools superintendent Michael Bennet is expected to be named Saturday as the future U.S. Senate replacement for Interior Secretary nominee Ken Salazar, according to two Democratic sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Gov. Bill Ritter is expected to name his U.S. Senate replacement pick on Saturday, ending a brief but frenzied period of speculation about who will take the seat of Interior Secretary nominee Ken Salazar.

The selection would be preliminary, since Salazar is not expected to resign his U.S. Senate seat until sometime after Jan. 15, when he faces a confirmation hearing — and later vote — to become President-elect Barack Obama's first Interior Secretary.

Apparently your version of Christianity is one in which that slanders and telling lies about other Christians is A-OK. I think you sound more like the followers of the Dark One, speaking with a forked tongue. You have a nice day.

So you reject the Holy Word of G-d; Jesus the Christ Himself.

You reject His commands in Luke 17:3 & John 7:24.

You need to seek the face of G-d and accept His Salvation.

but the heavy unionization turned it Democrat from that point on

Got to hate em. Back in the day of near-slave like conditions in the factories in the early 20th Century they could be seen as a positive. Today they are just a drain on the economy and the premier rat power base. Public enemy #1.

There was a mistake on Wikipedia stating the first, William Gullet, was a Democrat,

Ah good someone fixed it. I love/hate Wikipedia.

there was some speculation Curry would succeed Steele on the ticket with Ehrlich in '06 (something I personally endorsed), but that didn't materialize.

Too bad.

The Republicans were the first to run a Black candidate for statewide office, but that wasn't Steele. State Senator & Dr. Aris T. Allen was the first in 1978

Oh. I don't remember if I heard that or not in 2002. I forgot it if I did.

Barone theorized if Hogan had gotten the nomination, despite the bad GOP year, he might've actually managed an upset.

I have the feeling sans-watergate that '74 would have been a decent mid-term. So much scum won only because it like Leahy.

That hypothetical McGovern Mcmidterm could have been sweet.

The state wasn't ready for a woman Governor (and still has yet to have one),

Thank goodness they weren't ready for KKT. Too bad about Ellen Sauerberg though.

it was moving back to the Dems and with the dramatic increase in middle-class Blacks,

Such a travesty suck voters are just as rat as a resident of the Bronx.

Unfortunately, she didn't die (which would've been a blessing), but lingered horribly in a coma for the next 7 years of her life, dying at 70, without ever regaining consciousness.

Yikes I heard of her I didn't know she lived that long after that.

Audrey Scott

I see a black dem took her county council seat.

36 members in total, whose districts remained in place (albeit some added a member over time) until 1974

That's whacked out. This survived Baker Carr?

Confusing as hell.

Yeah. Kinda seems like the the way the British Parliament used to elect members long long ago. And it stinks they have 4 year terms

Lodge considered McCarthy part of the "rabble" that he didn't wish to be a part of.

What and awful VP Choice. Worst ever.

Human Events ran a piece, it used to online now it's not, about the '52 Senate races and they were rooting for the "Nationalist" Kennedy over Lodge.

I'm thinking a Southerner or quasi-southerner would've been best. Time magazine mentions Thurston Morton (moderate I think) and Ike's Sec Treas. Robert Anderson of Texas who it seems Ike liked a whole lot (bad sign). But given what happened to him later with the booze and criminality obviously not a good choice.

the legendary George Mahoney

Segregationist huh. Was he better than Agnew otherwise? Smells like Huckabee.

but because there was a proportional voting system ("unit voting"), Butler won a higher total in units.

I see that stuff was later called unconstitutional. Too bad. I'd like to use here in a general election to blunt Crook County.

David Markey

Did he ever hold an office? The political graveyard doesn't think so.

the Byrons were well to the right of both Mathias and Beall.

What a state. Dixiecrats and superrinos. How much of a DINO was Guv Schaefer? He sounds like a big one.

I still wonder if even with the most optimistic lines if we could squeeze 4 seats now given the drop-off in GOP support.

Au's proposal seems quite good to me. Or you could 3 pretty safe seats.

Barlett is old yes. Once you crack 80 I think it's time to retire.

But, of course, the Democrats control redistricting. I wonder if they’ll try to draw 7 comfortably Democrat districts,

Yikes.

"Ah good someone fixed it. I love/hate Wikipedia."

Yeah, I fixed it, actually. I have an account on it. I accidentally did it without being logged in and someone sent me a message saying I should join. I told 'em I already was a member and forgot to log in. When I logged in, the same person sent me a "welcome to Wiki" message... but I've already been a member since '06, I think. They're smoking crack over there.

"I have the feeling sans-watergate that '74 would have been a decent mid-term. So much scum won only because it like Leahy."

We probably would've lost seats, it just wouldn't have been as it ended up. Probably more like 1970. Most importantly, a lot of Governorships wouldn't have been lost. Such as AZ, CA, CO, CT, etc. Lamar! would've won that year in my state and would've been out in '82 (and then would've either run against Sasser that year or waited for the open seat in '84 to run against Gore, the only one who could've beaten him).

"That hypothetical McGovern Mcmidterm could have been sweet."

Yeah, though the scenario that would've elected McGovern would've meant a wipeout for the GOP. McGovern would've been terrifying as President. Like electing Henry (not George) Wallace. A nice man, but a dupe and an incredibly naive man on policy. Of course, with the False Messiah now, he's going to make McGovern look like Jesse Helms.

"Thank goodness they weren't ready for KKT. Too bad about Ellen Sauer(brey) though."

One might say Sauerbrey was the actual victor. Baltimore is the NOLA of MD. It's too bad she never tried out for a Congressional seat, but now at 71, she's a little past her prime.

"That's whacked out. This survived Baker Carr?"

It must have, since it didn't change during the early to mid '60s. They didn't redistrict and renumber all the districts until the 1974 elections. I still don't know how they get away with it as it stands without a one-member, one-district scenario (proportional, such as IL had is one thing, but they don't do that in MD, otherwise there'd be a larger number of members - then, of course, if you did, you'd have a crapload of ghost Republicans from Bawlamer and PG as inner city Chicago did).

"Yeah. Kinda seems like the the way the British Parliament used to elect members long long ago. And it stinks they have 4 year terms"

However, in the case of MD, it probably benefits us and prevents any dramatic and rapid turnover of new members, such as Republicans winning a single term and then not being able to repeat. 4 years gives them time to accomplish something and not have to be in constant reelection mode. In some states, like NY & RI, you had a situation where there were yearly elections for the legislature at some points. Do that today and that would be a nightmare. People then, though, didn't have to face a constant barrage of tv ads... no tv !

"What and awful VP Choice. Worst ever."

I think Biden and John Edwards are a smidge worse. Lodge was misguided, but he wasn't criminally evil.

"Human Events ran a piece, it used to online now it's not, about the '52 Senate races and they were rooting for the "Nationalist" Kennedy over Lodge."

I said, it would've been tough to decide at the time, but given that it was for control of the Senate, I might've reluctantly had to pull it for Lodge, but I wouldn't have liked it. I'd have preferred someone like Laurence Curtis, the Congressman who won that year, be the GOP nominee. He was a solid Conservative, probably the last unapologetic one ever elected up there. The only problem was that Curtis was 24 years older than JFK (and 9 years older than Lodge). Ironically, Curtis would outlive JFK by nearly 26 years (he died short of his 96th birthday in 1989).

"I'm thinking a Southerner or quasi-southerner would've been best. Time magazine mentions Thurston Morton (moderate I think) and Ike's Sec Treas. Robert Anderson of Texas who it seems Ike liked a whole lot (bad sign). But given what happened to him later with the booze and criminality obviously not a good choice."

The Southern strategy hadn't been adopted at that point. Nixon was looking to put the northeast in his column. Other than Lodge, he might've had to have gone with Nelson Rockefeller, then in his 1st term. Ultimately, his best bet might've been Goldwater himself, but being from an adjacent state, that would've been considered risky not selecting someone from the east. Gov. Bill Stratton of IL might've been an interesting choice, though he went down to defeat that year to Otto Kerner. When I wrote to Governor Stratton a few years before his death, I'm sorry I didn't think to ask him about that scenario. I wrote to Gov. Bill Scranton of PA regarding 1964, and wow, he was STILL pissed about it in his letter to me over 30-some years later.

"Segregationist huh. Was he better than Agnew otherwise? Smells like Huckabee."

I can't say what Mahoney would've done. He never won office (aside from an appointment to the State Racing Commission and was elected Delegate to Dem Conventions) but was regarded as a perennial populist rabble-rouser for Governor and Senator. He was actually from Baltimore (Irish Catholic pol), but the urban liberals despised him. He probably would've been similar in style to Lester Maddox, who won the same year he ran his most serious race for Governor ('66). Agnew ran to his left (he had been a liberal Republican), but the riots in Baltimore so shook him that he began to reassess if taking a liberal approach to issues was workable anymore. He moved over to Mahoney's law and order mindset. Had Agnew lost to Mahoney in '66, Nixon surely would've gone with liberal MA Gov. John Volpe instead (he wanted a non-WASP ethnic running mate). Volpe would've probably been identical or worse than Jerry Ford was as President.

"David Markey Did he ever hold an office? The political graveyard doesn't think so."

Careful. Larry Kestenbaum doesn't keep up to date across the board on things (I think I suggested to him once to allow a select group of us access to editing, I've been a member of his advisory panel for 10 years now, but he prefers to enter in all of it himself with coding he devised all from one location. In that way, he is 100% responsible for all content, but he only rarely updates it because of his full-time political office and family committments).

"What a state. Dixiecrats and superrinos. How much of a DINO was Guv Schaefer? He sounds like a big one."

Schaefer was pretty much for Schaefer, he was not a DINO so much as an iconoclast and could often infuriate everybody. He'd hold grudges over little things. One I remember had to do with a fountain commissioned by his long-time companion (he never married) who served as hostess during his administration. Glendening shut the fountain off shortly after Schaefer was elected Comptroller, and Schaefer didn't forgive him for that slight. The two of them HATED each other (I heard Schaefer's pet name for Glendening was "the Ayatollah"). Schaefer much preferred Ehrlich and Ehrlich turned the fountain back on and Schaefer was quite pleased by that. A fountain. Oh, well... Schaefer was probably senile during his last term as Comptroller, though it afforded him to be blissfully PC-free. He lost renomination in '06.

Bennet is married and IIRC has three kids.

This is not a payoff to the NEA. By Dem standards Bennet is a reformer and has clashed several times with the union.

He intends to run and has already hired his political consultant.

This is a most surprising and puzzling choice for both camps. Bennet is a really smart guy but has never run for elective office and has little recognition outside Denver. Heck, betcha most DPS parents couldn't name the super. Ritter has ticked off a lot of Dems by doing this. He also has pubbies licking their chops for 2010.

Nobody knows his positions outside of education. He grew up in a fairly prominent Dem family and is married to a Sierra Club wife, so I'd be surprised if he isn't conventionally liberal on most issues. That could be a problem for 2010, however, as he will be tagged with the label of Denver liberal with an East Coast pedigree. So, he may have to tack to the middle on some issues.

They're smoking crack over there.

LOL. I have a logon but haven't bothered to use it in quite some time. Checking it just now, 2006 was the last time I edited something using it. Some of my edits have bolded Ms in front of them??

'84 to run against Gore, the only one who could've beaten him

I don't get why the son of a guy who lost was such a strong candidate. That Ashe was a lousy RINO right? Like that Mayor of Fort Wayne Paul Helmke that ran against Evan Bayh in 1998. Now he heads up the Brady Bunch.

One might say Sauerbrey was the actual victor. Baltimore is the NOLA of MD.

Oh certainly. Any rat with a small margin is suspect.

Bawlamer

Is that how natives say it? Yikes.

4 years gives them time to accomplish something and not have to be in constant reelection mode.

I like the idea of 3 year terms. With a 1 year term...oh boy.

I think Biden and John Edwards are a smidge worse.

I meant on our side.

Eagleton of course caused political damage and was thus a bad pick.

I said, it would've been tough to decide at the time, but given that it was for control of the Senate

Too bad the ACU was founded a few decades earlier. I'd have voted for Lodge. Lyndon Johnson? Shudder.

Laurence Curtis,

I see he ran in 62 and lost the primary to George Lodge(still alive), dammit.

The Southern strategy hadn't been adopted at that point

Allegedly Nixon ran a 50 state race didn't he.

He should've focused more on the South imo.

I wrote to Gov. Bill Scranton of PA regarding 1964, and wow, he was STILL pissed about it in his letter to me over 30-some years later.

Stilled pissed he lost? Sure why not. Typical big headed fellow.

Nixon surely would've gone with liberal MA Gov. John Volpe instead (he wanted a non-WASP ethnic running mate).

I read somewhere that Rocky was allowed to name the VP pick. Sounds unlikely. Oh Tricky dick you stink. Another MA RINO?

Careful. Larry Kestenbaum doesn't keep up to date across the board on things

I noticed it omitted an office I knew who a guy had held. So did Markey hold an office? Or was he just a vet?

Got me. I don't know what you've edited. Most of my edits consist of just correcting factual mistakes, although I wrote a good chunk of the biography for a NC liberal Democrat Senator named Frank Graham.

"I don't get why the son of a guy who lost was such a strong candidate."

Because Gore, Jr. had been in Congress for 8 years by 1984 and was regarded as the strongest likely candidate for the Senate and with obvious built-in name recognition. Of the other House members, Marilyn Lloyd of Chattanooga, a 10-year veteran, seemed to express no interest, Bill Boner (my Congressman) also didn't take a run, Ed Jones was too old and Harold Ford, Sr. couldn't win a statewide race. The GOP at that point was very weak. We maxed out around 1972 and aside from Baker and Alexander, the other Republicans turned out to be weak or too green. I wish Robin Beard had stayed in the House another term and ran against Gore, it would've been a more equal footing. But after Beard's loss against Sasser in '82, he never ran for office again. I thought that was a shame.

"Is that how natives say it? Yikes."

Yup. Kinda like they say She-caaaa-go in yours. ;-P

"I like the idea of 3 year terms. With a 1 year term...oh boy."

They had 3-year terms for Governor in PA at one point.

"I meant on our side. Eagleton of course caused political damage and was thus a bad pick."

Actually, McGovern dumping Eagleton probably caused more damage. It may McGovern look bad. Besides, the GOP had a really horrific VP running mate at one point... Earl Warren in 1948. Had Dewey won, Warren would've been the odds-on choice to succeed him in 1956. Warren was an absolutely despicable individual.

"I see he ran in 62 and lost the primary to George Lodge(still alive), dammit."

Age was a big factor. Imagine Curtis at 69 facing off against Ted the Swimmer at 29.

"Allegedly Nixon ran a 50 state race didn't he. He should've focused more on the South imo."

In hindsight, yes, but some of those states were simply too anti-GOP for obvious reasons.

"Stilled pissed he lost? Sure why not. Typical big headed fellow."

Pissed he wasn't able to stop Goldwater's nomination. It would've been a pointless exercise since no Republican would win in '64 after the assassination.

"I read somewhere that Rocky was allowed to name the VP pick. Sounds unlikely. Oh Tricky dick you stink. Another MA RINO?"

Well, there were a ton of liberals in the GOP. A lot of them actually believed in it and thought it would work. We know now the answer to that.

"I noticed it omitted an office I knew who a guy had held. So did Markey hold an office? Or was he just a vet?"

As far as I know, he's not held any other office.

Was he? I had no idea. I think he was a liberal on the court but that's all I know.

Yeah. But the Carolinas and Texas (fraud) could've gone Nixon's way. Them plus stolen Hawaii (and that OK elector who nobly tried to get the electors to "deny labor Socialist nominee.") would've been victory.

My recollection regarding Michael Bennet’s sexual orientation was completely mistaken. Last night I spoke with someone who works with him, and Bennet’s married with three kids; I had mistaken him with someone else that works with him.

It did sound odd that having the first openly gay Senator would have gathered so little attention, so I should have known all along that I was mistaking him for someone else. I apologize for posting that (albeit prefaced with “unless I’m mistaken”) without making sure.

"Shi as in **it cause that's what we're full of. :p"

Ah.

"Antebellum I see. 4 seems like to long to me.

Until 1875, actually. 4 is a good term for a Governor if they're a good Republican. 1 is good for a bad rodent. ;-)

"Was he? I had no idea. I think he was a liberal on the court but that's all I know."

One of the top most destructive figures on the political and cultural landscape in the 20th century. Ike's greatest mistake. He wanted to have LBJ appoint a corrupt leftist successor (Abe Fortas), but thankfully didn't get his wish.

"Yeah. But the Carolinas and Texas (fraud) could've gone Nixon's way. Them plus stolen Hawaii (and that OK elector who nobly tried to get the electors to "deny labor Socialist nominee.") would've been victory."

And IL and NM were stolen, too. My father, who was 21 in that year, cast his first vote in NM, albeit under pressure from his rabid ultraleft mother, he voted for Kennedy, but he was really put off by his campaign style (very reminiscent of the hysteria we saw this past year with a certain individual). Said it had nothing to do with policy, that they were trying to "sell sex."

Would be nice. One thing is for certain, though, and that's John Boehner will NEVER be Speaker.

"Sell sex huh. I heard once that Tricky won the female vote and Men elected Kennedy. Don’t know if that’s true. They thought he was “cool” I bet."

It was the first real modern Hollyweird style campaign (although I think FDR might've, but not like how it was by then). But I never saw the breakdown for male vs. female voters. I'd be mighty surprised if Nixon won the woman vote.

It's an old canard. I keep reading women voted more GOP than men until 1964. I know they voted for Harding overwhelmingly but I also have trouble believing they didn't go for 'Jack'.

There are exit polls for 1960 but I don't know if there're available online.

Could this famous couple from 1948 be atypical? LOL

I expect to see "should we repeal Taft Hartley?" in the NYTimes soon.

I think Norman Rockwell was probably more correct. Of course, note the Dem bias he has for Truman, showing a boorish husband screaming at the wife over Dewey. Today, you’d have a harridan of a wife screaming, “No sex for you ever !” if McCain were to win over the False Messiah. Some FReepers have disagreed, but I think it’s important your significant other and you are generally on the same page politically. I literally couldn’t tolerate someone who was not of the same basic ideology, because they’d be hostile to my basic concepts of right and wrong (I mean, how could you live with, share a bed with, make love to someone who believes infanticide is a God-given right ?).

You-know-who and I were basically in agreement (except on one, she was not favorably disinclined towards gay marriage - however I told her if she can watch gay porn, two males packing each other, and not be perturbed by it, I wouldn’t bother her again. Of course, she couldn’t, because it ain’t a beautiful thing). ;-)

(The boy is for Wallace obviously (he wants a handout, possibly candy like RED licorice) and the Dog (barks at black men) for spry young Strom)

Even now DUmmies think “loud right-wing men” force their beliefs on their poor little Edith Bunker wives who can’t think for themselves or vote dim in secret.

I’m with you, perhaps if a freeper is less stridently political than you or I they could compartmentalize it all.

I hope I’m never faced with the sitch of an otherwise very compatible girl who was a politically ignorant Obama lover (and couldn’t be reached, some people just don’t have the capacity) . I mean I see Barry on the tv, the f word comes out, can’t help it ;), Greenpeace protest? ****ers And it’s at the top of what I like to talk about along with sports and my favorite crap on tv. I don’t see how it could work even if she was beautiful and laughed at my jokes and was willing to scrub my floors. ;)

Yes you told me that I think.

The boy is 2 years old, born in that great year of 1946 that kicked off the biggest spoiled generation in the history of the republic, the Baby Boomers (following the great f**k of 1945). Despite mama, he'll be raised in a decent GOP household, by 1964, he'll be a volunteer for Goldwater just as he's heading off to college. By 1967, he'll become a radical Socialist Democrat, burning draft cards, leading protest rallies, and he'll go out to San Francisco where he'll drop acid and f**k openly in the parks while barking at the "pigs" and the "establishment." He'll go on to Woodstock and Altamont, before settling into the insurance business in San Francisco, and a multimillion dollar home in Marin County, where his wife is a New Age guru and Democrat activist for Barbara Boxer and Lynn Woolsey. He's 62 now, his 30-something trust-fund babies participated in the dot-com bust of the late '90s, and of course, they all voted for the False Messiah and Cindy Sheehan against that "right-wing fascist warmonger" Nancy Pelosi. I wish dad had just kept it in his pants after the war.

No, that's not a real person, of course, but that's how far too many kids of that era turned out. My aunt (father's youngest sister) turned into a radical Socialist and supporter of La Raza (nevermind she AIN'T Hispanic), brainwashed by her mother. Both my father and uncle, her older brothers, born in 1939 and 1940 respectively, turned into normal people who now vote Republican for President today because it is unimaginable and recklessly irresponsible to do otherwise.
