Police say a man concealing a weapon walked into the KLBJ radio station demanding to speak with Radio Talk-Show host Jeff Ward Tuesday afternoon.
According to a spokesperson with the Austin Police Department, a man by the name of Rocky Perez Lopez asked to speak with Jeff Ward at approximately 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. When Ward was unavailable, police say the individual was lead into the conference room to speak with one of the producers.
Police say Lopez then went on a tirade discussing his anger about the government. Lopez then said he was getting ready to go postal, according to police.
After saying this to the individuals in the conference room, police say he lifted up his shirt revealing a gun stuck in the waistband of his pants.
At that time, police were called to the scene where they learned from the receptionist that Perez had visited the station earlier that morning demanding to speak with Jeff Ward.
Perez also said he used to be a DPS officer and worked Security Detail for Bill Clement. APD followed up on the statements and confirmed that Perez told the truth about his history.
Perez fled the scene and police showed up at his home in South Austin. While awaiting for Perez outside, Perez drove his vehicle out of his garage and down the road. Police followed in pursuit and caught him in the parking lot of a Sunset Valley Home Depot store.
Perez was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, according to the Travis County web site.
No one was hurt at KLBJ or through out the pursuit for Rocky Perez.
Any local information about the radio station and Rocky Perez would be helpful.
I use to listen to Rush on that station(at work here in NY on the internet/streaming audio) and am making the grand assumption that it is mostly a conservative talk radio station. For whatever thats worth.
If someone carrys a gun its one thing. If some brandishes said gun, and says he is about to go ‘postal’, that to me would be a threat......
I’m rather puzzled about his choice of Jeff Ward. To me, he’s rather annoying in that he has a very sarcastic voice, but I’ve never heard him say anything that would cause much controversy. Suzanna Hupp often subs for him.....he better not show up when she’s around—LOL!
Rocky Perez Lopez is just doing his part in the “Keep Austin Weird” promotion.
I heard very little after this incident, since I don’t watch much network news other than weather.
I listen to Ward most days. He smacks down most all politicians, dems and repubs.
Too bad Sgt. Sam wasn’t there to jam a wrench in this guy’s gears.
Also the studio is just down the block from the most crime infested area of Austin.
Suzanna is on now! I really think she should have the PM talk show. Jeff just keeps beating dead horses.
I listen to Jeff sometimes on my way home. He’s a little too sarcastic for me to listen to on a daily basis, but I get a kick out of his “pauses” and some of the things he says, like the other day when he was talking about Richard Simmons going to capitol hill - he played excerpts of Simmon’s speech then he’d pause with his usual “hmm” he does and then he’d ask “Did I say that he’s on capitol hill?” or something to that nature. It was hilarious.
Did you hear Suzanna the other day talking about one of her kiddo’s being bullied? I loved it when she said the school districts zero tolerance policy doesn’t trump her son’s right to self defense.
During these days and times, there was NO SECURITY?
I didn’t know she was on now—we’ve been up in Oklahoma for a while. I will tune in this afternoon. I agree that she’s good—but I would be surprised if she would take the job full time. She has too many other irons in the fire, I believe.
I sure wish I could listen. I met Suzanna once. She is *Awsome*!
2 had problems where some idiot gave them trouble and both times the trouble makers were given a shellacking right in school. I was called down to the asst. Principle office where I told them in no uncertain terms that I defend my kids right to defend themselves. Upon getting a short suspension, I asked my kids what movie they wanted to go see, right in front of the asst. principle. One was a guy who understood and gave me a knowing look. the other was a sob sister liberal woman who never got it.....
My first thought when I read the headline was "OMG, Sgt. Sam finally had enough of Ed and snapped!"
I am completely hooked on the Todd and Don show.
Did he have a CFL?
Was the station a "gun free zone"?
Sorry but be prepared to hear from the "This is Texas. I got a right to blah blah blah..." crowd.
I heard part of that show. She does not hold back any punches.
Yes, and she said that some time ago. She left the state legislature to take care of her kids.
They are good. Too bad KLBJ has Boortz on most days. Are you listening this morning? From breast feeding a six yr old to gun show age....
