Yellowstone Earthquake Update

Nearly 400 earthquakes have rocked Yellowstone National Park since last Friday. The quakes are putting scientists on alert, but they say this type of activity isn't unusual. As long as the quakes continue, the park will keep a very close eye on the region.

Hank Heasler, the Park's Geologist, said "Back in 1985, up to 3 months of earthquakes (occured). (They were) up to magnitudes 4.7. So the past four days have been relatively energetic for the last few years."

Scientists say predicitng earthquakes is still in it's infancy and not reliable. Park officials are not worried that this swarm of quakes could lead to a catastrophic event. However with the lack of accurate forecasting it is possible that these small tremors could be a precursor to a much bigger quake or even a volcanic eruption.

I was 300 miles away from Mt. St. Helen's. We only got enough ash three times to say we got ash. Enough to wipe your finger on the hood of the car and see the mark.

By the way....do not do that as the little shards of glass will scratch the paint, or so I was told.

I had a great deal of trouble breathing. It made my very tired and sleepy to be outside.

We could see a glow in the sky, but it was not magma, just the particles in the air and the sun shinning through it.

When the Yellowstone caldera blows again you can kiss 1/3 of the lower 48 goodbye ... and look for an earth ELE with it.

What is an ELE?

There is another thread about the US abandoning Israel...I would be curious to see if the number of bombs from Gaza into Israel are pretty close to the number of quakes in Yellowstone.

I KNOW it is a stretch but the hand of God is mighty and just.

Watched the inhabitants of the Gaza strip pulled from their homes crying and screaming made homeless by our politics.
Katrina made about the same amount of people homeless and living in tents also, soon after.

Our government has proclaimed support for Israel but it is a lie...they say one thing and then manuver for land to terrorists, this country will pay a price.

Thanks for the heads-up. We might have a real “surprise” in store for us one of these days. If you are in southwest South Dakota, you are about the same distance as we are in SW Colorado.

Where’s the electricity going to come from to run your “new Trane furnace with the super-filter” when the all the electrical substations in the western two thirds of the country are shorted out due to ash?

. Lots of what appears to be harmonic tremors (magma movement). From what I’ve read, some of the seismologists and vulcanologists are getting very interested in what is happening.”

Unkus, where are you getting this information that its harmonic tremors? Because if it is harmonic tremors, then we are in real deep, deep kimshi.

More like polish, really. To this day I use Mt. St. Helen's ash as a very fine polishing compound. Works great on enamels.

abigkahuna, you got me mixed up with someone else. I didn’t mention harmonic tremors. But you definately spark my interest: What are harmonic tremors and why are we in deep kimshi with them?

Oh, come on. Just because there are harmonic tremors doesn't necessarily mean there is going to be a cataclysmic eruption. It just means there is magma movement...something that HAS been known to happen without consequences.

The seismograph at Yellowstone Lake has been shaking more or less nonstop for several hours now in minor tremors.

Whoa. So what which of these...

Four Major Types of Seiosmograms

...do we have there?
