Yellowstone Earthquake Update

Nearly 400 earthquakes have rocked Yellowstone National Park since last Friday. The quakes are putting scientists on alert, but they say this type of activity isn't unusual. As long as the quakes continue, the park will keep a very close eye on the region.

Hank Heasler, the Park's Geologist, said "Back in 1985, up to 3 months of earthquakes (occured). (They were) up to magnitudes 4.7. So the past four days have been relatively energetic for the last few years."

Scientists say predicitng earthquakes is still in it's infancy and not reliable. Park officials are not worried that this swarm of quakes could lead to a catastrophic event. However with the lack of accurate forecasting it is possible that these small tremors could be a precursor to a much bigger quake or even a volcanic eruption.

We just got a new Trane furnace with the super-filter; we may survive the ashfall. Food is a different matter.

If it blows you'll be fine if you're east of PA or south of GA...

I looked at the old seismograms from December 29th and they showed periods of a few hours of the same kind of readings that people here are speculating are harmonic tremors. I don’t know if they are or not, but I tend to think not since these seismograms are public info and I think we’d have heard about it in the media if harmonic tremors had been present for the past couple of days.

If this is a pending eruption, the good news is that it appears to be pretty localized which suggests that any eruption will be limited, which is very much the norm. There are something like 50 “regular” eruptions at Yellowstone for every super-eruption. So don’t jump off any bridges if you hear there has been an eruption.

Thanks. I think you’re right. Good people with good sense there. Definately in the danger zone here in southwest Colorado.

So don’t jump off any bridges if you hear there has been an eruption.

If it pops off like the supervolcano, we'll won't need the news to tell us. We'll all hear it.

The modern MSM don't look for stories, they look for press releases; no press release, no story.

i don’t know if this has anything to do with anything but...here it is. lol in about 1982 i was in Lolo Hot Springs Montana, went to get in, saw a garden hose running into the pool, asked about it, the lady there told me since Mt. St. Helens had erupted in ‘80 the Hot Springs were TOO hot, they had to add cold water so people could stand to get in it. there are a lot of miles between those two places. :-|

You're welcome in New Hampshire. Bring seeds and ammo, and a warm coat.

At http://www.quake.utah.edu/helicorder/ you will see Yellowstone Region, it has the list of the seismographs in the areas.

The University of Utah web site lists all three in the Yellowstone "Region". Looking at a map of seismographs the "region" only extents about 10 miles outside Yellowstone Park in all directions.

Map at http://www.quake.utah.edu/helicorder/yell_webi.htm (locations are coded)

The seismograph for Yellowstone Lake can be found at http://www.quake.utah.edu/helicorder/lkwy_webi.htm
