No year that saw a 778-point single-day stock market drop, the price of oil fluctuate by more than $100 a barrel and the death of Irvine Robbins -- the inventor of Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream -- can be called good. But the election of Barack Obama as president made 2008 important.
During a long political season, Obama was both charming and charmed -- favored by the gods of economic catastrophe, who turned a tight election into a Democratic mandate. A neophyte senator managed to combine inspiration with organization, progressive ideals with a conservative temperament, and a message of change with a manner of reassurance. As evidence, the "team of rivals" in his proposed Cabinet seems more like a team of professionals.

Nymphomaniacs ... LOL!
Actually, I suspect he prefers young men with tingles in their legs.
good lord. where’s the monster barf bag alert!
Although I guess "washingtonpost.com" is pretty much a synonym for "barf alert."
I think 0 is sending a thrill up more than Michael Gerson’s leg.
A neophyte senator managed to combine inspiration with organization, progressive communist ideals
There. Fixed it.
Oh Mr. Gerson, I think you and the rest of your traitors to the Fourth Estate in the presstitution racket will provide plenty of support for the empty suit. Indeed, I am kind of looking forward to January 21, 2009 when the news is not so depressing as the MSM reopens their turd polishing kits...
More like a Golf Alpha Yankee alert............
"Indeed," explains Joe Klein of Time magazine, "as the weeks have passed since the election, I've felt -- as an urban creature myself -- less restricted, less defensive. Empowered, almost. Is it possible that, as a nation, we're shedding our childlike, rural innocence and becoming more mature, urban, urbane . . . dare I say it, sophisticated?"
Obama represents everything I think is wrong for the economic future of this country, but being a Country first kind of gal, I do hope for the best. If he turns this country around (which I highly doubt) that means my personal financial future will not suffer. I am sure the majority of Freepers agree with me, we do not want this country to fail. We just don't think that government intervention is the answer! Let the overextended, financially ruined companies fail on their own merits, in the end it will work out for the best. Other, more innovative companies will take their place, that is what capitalism is all about.
So I can truly say, from the bottom of my heart, that for this countries well being I hope Obama (and the one party rule in Washington) does not fail, because that would be bad for all of us.
If, on the other hand, he does fail (which I predict) we will replace the whole lot in four years. I also, selfishly, am glad that McCain, or a Republican was not elected to take the blame from the inevitable!
“Otherwise why the loony reference to Irvine Robbins the inventor of Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream>?”
‘Cuz the writer is in fact a loon perhaps.......
I hope and pray for the best too, but I believe the best for our country would be an economy too weak for any permanent entitlement programs to pass, a global downturn so sharp that it will slow foreign jackals in their attacks on freedom, and the entire string of Obama blunders that one would expect from a neophyte. that would be the best for America, and it is what I hope for.
... I am sure the majority of Freepers agree with me, we do not want this country to fail.
I do not want this country to fail, but I do want Obama's government to fail or come so close to failure that it has no accomplishments at all. Freedom is far more important than short-term economic prosperity. Fortunately, the bailout is so expensive and so stupid, that it is likely to suck all the funding out of Washington DC and leave nothing for Obama to use in expanding his power. I imaging the bailout alone could turn a brief downturn into an extended recession, and I'm okay with that. Recession goes away with the recovery. Government growth is forever.
Must have him confused with BJ Clintoon.
Thanks for the newest name for the msm
nymphomaniacs fits perfectly
The most blatant successful use of the Marxism: "Make it a BIG lie..."
The Socialists plotted and planned their strategy for an economic meltdown that would result in their grab for power = they executed it to perfection and with their staunch allies, the media, made to brain-dead public believe it was the republicans fault -
No amount of proof, even the videos of proof as to who caused the debacle, could get through the fog of Socialist rhetoric.
Nikita must be laughing his head off, wherever he is. They fulfilled his promise of 50 years ago: "We will bury you within 50 years - and we will not have to fire a shot."
And what were their weapons?
No. One weapon: Our Public gov't schools.
No. Two: Infiltrating and absorbing the democrat party.
No. three: the MSM/
No. four: a citizenry asleep at the switch.
So who to blame for the collapse that may well spell the end of our freedoms?
If a home owner ignores, year after year, his deteriorating roof until it finally collapses....
