Matheson again fights automatic pay hike By Lee Davidson Deseret News Published:

Dec. 29, 2008 12:00 a.m. Despite the country's economic meltdown, Congress is about to receive an automatic $4,700 pay raise on Thursday — a 2.8 percent increase over the current $169,300 salary for most members. Rep. Jim Matheson says that is unconscionable, and he's vowing to renew his annual fight to stop such automatic raises. He says the bad economy might just help him win this year, and a government watchdog group is joining his battle to say the raise is a bad idea in such times.

The American taxpayers should demand that “each and every perk” Congress gets should be eliminated from their free lunches, cars, free vacations, travel expenses, per diem; everything! They can then figure out how to steal what they need along with all their other corrupt habits involving extorting money and goodies out of lobbyists. Their comfort level should be on the same par as our troops. The DC royals should live like the peons they’re trying to steal from.

Considering that most, if not all, members of Congress are millionaires, they should be paying us for the privilege of being there. After all, what do they ACTUALLY do of value? But, as Mrs. "Rich beyond your wildest dreams" Pelosi says, Washington costs a lot to live there.

...I know I’m gonna get flamed for saying this....but...$169,300 is not a lot of money considering they have to keep two addresses....Washington DC is one of the most expensive cities in the country for housing....a small 575 square foot apt will run you $2100/month:

I agree. I use to live in Northern Va. I got my salary off commission. They spend, spend, spend, spend, and spend. They have a better retirement system then everyone else. They have top notch health care (even when they lose; retire, die;spouse)

I won't flame you, but just remember:

They stole our retirements, but THEIR retirements are safe as the gold in Fort Knox.

Think about that for a while - while you try to figure out a safe place to save money for retirement. (Hint - there isn't one.)
