WASHINGTON (AP) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the country is not "race-blind" and "we shouldn't deceive ourselves that we're race-blind," but said the election of Barack Obama as the first African-American president was a key moment in history.
"I think all Americans were quite taken with the fact that we were able, after the long history we've been through, that initial birth defect of slavery, that we've elected an African-American."

I think the fact that he is the first POTUS from outside the continental US is more significant than being first African-American. If we make his skin color the key “first” then we are essentially going against Dr. King and saying “color of skin” DOES matter...even making the skin color of one parent a key factor giving skin color much more emphasis than content of heart. Moreover, is he the first POTUS born to a non-American citizen? Would the same hype have been given if one of our previous president’s parents was never an American citizen? Just wondering...

I have always thought Condi was one of the most overrated members of Bush & Co. I must say, she fits in perfectly--she's a dyed-in-the-wool internationalist, bred in the elitest millieux. How many people know that her dissertation advisor was Maddy Albright's father? She's basically a continuation of the internationalist policies of the last two admins. She's not quite as bad as Mad Maddie, but beneath the tough posturing, she's not so different.
I suppose I should be more grateful to the Bushies--I got the bare minimum (tax-cut, 2 reasonably good supreme court appointees, decisive response to 9/11), but God Almighty, will I be glad to see them hit the road!!! Good riddance.

Regardless of the claims against this truism, I have believed for years that most “regular” Americans don’t have that many issues with race, not counting the jerks that comprise the KKK and Nation of Islam. In my own case, and of course I’m somewhat limited to my own family and circle of friends, I’ve always taken exception to various people because of their behavior, not their skin color.
We can all name high-profile blacks whose behavior is nothing short of utterly disgusting, but the thing I fail to understand is why they’re seldom called on it. Why is it that if you criticize the actions of any non-white person, you’re automatically racist? Minority advocates are gleefully converting America into a Cuckoo’s Nest, and we let them get away with it. How idiotic - not to mention cowardly - is that?

Now that "The One" has been elected to the highest office in the land, I NEVER want to hear about race again.
