there was never a question in my mind that his Nobel Prize for Literature was deserved, although I cringed when he received it because I knew he would seize the opportunity to make ugly and propagandistic statements. Of course, I was right about that - you didnt have to be Nostradamus. Pinter attacked the US government as if it were the modern avatar of the Third Reich. He used his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, in the words of the Washington Post, to denounce the U.S. invasion of Iraq and to call British prime minister Tony Blair a deluded idiot.
What we are facing here, I submit, is what we might call the Ezra Pound Perplex or, alternatively, the Leni Riefenstahl Dilemma? Forget the Nobel Prize, which has indeed become a racket, assuming it was ever anything else. Pinters death raises a more important question. What do we do with great artists whose political ideas are anathema to us? How do we regard their work?..

I’m glad he’s dead.
A LEFTIST winning the Nobel Prize? Wow!
Perhaps he is sharing his cell in hell with his buddy Saddam Hussein.
Well, rest in piece, Mr. Pinter. The bio makes me respect Antonia Fraser less, but that’s what their class is like, anyway.
As far as I can tell, I’ve never seen anything he wrote.
Miserable “artist”, even more miserable human.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
I never cared for Pinter’s work.
Richard Wagner is a much better example of a great artist who was a thoroughly rotten human being.
***What do we do with great artists whose political ideas are anathema to us? How do we regard their work?..****
Pull their “artistic grants” and see if their work will sell on it’s own merits.
How do we regard their work?
Much as I regard dogsh*t.
It exists.
So much hate for Pinter the maggot, and deservedly so, but so many prayers and so much love for the evil Kennedy who, among hating and betraying his own nation with every breath, also killed a woman. Strange.
Oooooooh, that will hurt!
You hit the nail.
A vile of warm wee wee on his grave.
And if he got the leadership he wanted, he wouldn't be calling them deluded idiots, would he, unless he enjoyed torture and imprisonment. Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Interesting, Roger, you don’t mention in your short list the artists who supported and continue to support the genocidal Communist regimes. This obsession with Nazism, long gone, buried, while Communism still rages around us, is somewhat pathological, doncha think? Elephant in the room?
Has a conservative ever won?
We need to mock them - get a bunch of self important blow-hards to give our side "prizes".
Maybe we should do some for newspapers too - apparently the respect of loyal readers quit motivating them about 40 years ago.
A prayer up for his hate-shriveled little soul. He’s going to need it.
Great answer. Pinter made it on his own- but most of today's "shock" artist do it with grants. You are insightful Ruy Dias de Bivar.
