Basically...China is way ahead of America in infrastructure construction, science...everything. Going from China to America is like going from the "Jetsons" to the "Flintstones".

Comparing Detroit to Hong Kong isn’t exactly fair. As you must know, Hong Kong was for decades the jewel of the capitalist world, and did not rejoin China proper until very recently.

I reject the notion that Hong Kong is a Chinese city, in anything but name, on the grounds that its every admirable quality derives from the fact that it wasn’t Chinese for a considerable period.

Bottom line is that Friedman is almost always wrong, is completely liberal and can't see how taxes are one of the main differences in what he sees in Hong Kong vs. what he sees in New York City.
