N. Korea: Pyongyang Bids Korean Wave to Recede (party officials watching daily SK news)

Pyongyang Bids Korean Wave to Recede

North Korean authorities are reportedly cracking down on DVDs of South Korean TV dramas and radios that can tune into South Korean broadcasts to stem the Korean pop culture wave that has belatedly hit the North.

A source familiar with North Korean affairs on Wednesday said some 10 episodes of a 30-episode South Korean drama series are normally copied on a DVD in China and smuggled into North Korea. And these spread quickly among North Koreans via the black market.

Many North Korean border guards or security officers charged with cracking down on the practice can apparently be bribed to close an eye.

A South Korean intelligence official said, "Especially, North Korea developed its own DVD player in 2006 with a view to developing its own IT industry, this ironically provided momentum for the spread of South Korean soap operas."

Radio also played a role in the late arrival of the Korean Wave. North Koreans must report their radios to regional security offices and have them permanently soldered to receive only state channels. But a flood of smuggled radios from China is allowing an increasing number of North Koreans to listen clandestinely to South Korean broadcasts.

South Korean broadcasts can be received with satellite antennas south of Pyongyang. A South Korean intelligence officer said some senior North Korean officials watch the 9 o'clock news on South Korean TVs in the evening and even watch the morning news from the South before going to work.

The end is getting near. Recent movements in N. Korea show that they are panicking over their control slipping away. They are just cracking down on everything without thinking through how they are going to take care of the inevitable consequence of their action.

Especially, they are banning all Chinese imports and severely restricting any spontaneous market activities. Chinese imports account for 99% of all products on sale in N. Korean markets. They only allow market to open every 10th day. With the state unable to supply little food or goods, this would effectively drive people to cease any way of making a living and feeding themselves. Besides, this is not a temporary measure.

On top of that, people know Kim Jong-il is very sick. All these make up the volatile mix which could go off.

Does it have a hand crank or does it use that new-fangled stuff called electricity?

Sounds like the fairness doctrine. We have government bureaucrats come into our homes and fix our radios and TVs so they receive only NPR and MSNBC. I believe this would be acceptable to the dingbats over at DU-since I'm convinced half of their posters are posting from North Korea anyway

Significant Changes in North Korean Inner Circles

It is commonly believed in South Korea and the U.S. that North Korea has made some significant changes to the inner circle surrounding Kim Jong Il, but there is no clear sign of that in the North Korean fundamental ruling system, in which Kim Jong Il still represents the core of authority.

Gen. Walter L. Sharp, Commander of the United States Forces Korea, said at a Christmas party for South Korean and U.S. generals on the 22nd that both militaries have been preparing extensively for a full-scale war against North Korea this year, and are ready to provide fully for several scenarios, like a state of unrest or a regime change. The possible six unstable patterns are a regime change, a civil war caused by a coup detat, a massive defection of North Korean civilians, proliferation of WMD like nuclear or bio-chemical weapons, massive natural damage, and abduction of South Korean citizens by North Korea. http://www.dailynk.com/english/read.php?cataId=nk00100&num=4398

Few dictatorships survive the dictator;that is why the Soviet charge of “cult of personality” was real.As long as the “Party “is more important than the Leader ,the system can survive.

Ever hear of The Chosin Reservoir, from which the Marines made their great fighting withdrawal in 1950? It was an old Japanese hydro plant. I suspect a lot of the electricity used in the DPRK is still generated by the hydro plants built by the Japanese back when they were Korea's imperial masters. Communism creates nothing.

Where would the revolt come from?

The Army? The Politburo? A combination of the two?

I can’t imagine a revolt coming from the general populace as they’re so beaten down (physically and psychologically) many wouldn’t know where to start.

Let’s just say that Kim Jong-il gets ousted from a group of his generals and/or political advisors. Could we even count on them to be more receptive to South Korea or the US? They strike me as every bit as xenophobic as Kim Jong-il is.

Erectricity is the tool of the western imperialistic pig-dog swine controlling the flunkist government of South Chosun (Korea - as named by the North).

Chosun’s DVD player is powered by the environmentally friendly ‘Kim Jong-Il smile power’. His smiles emit energized DVD particles that then provide the power.

Whereas the primitive western pig-dogs still wallow in their coal-powered filth!

(how’s that sound for North Korean propaganda?)

:-P
