President-elect Barack Obama gathered with family and friends on Tuesday for a private memorial service for the beloved grandmother who helped raise him.
Madelyn Payne Dunham, known to her friends as Toot, died Nov. 2, two days before Obama won election to become the nations first African-American president. She was 86.
Obama did not speak to reporters at the small home that had been converted into the First Unitarian Church in Nuuanu. Aides said Obamas half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, and her husband, Konrad Ng, also were present.
Following the ceremony, Obama drove to the Lanai Lookout. He and about 20 members of his family climbed over a stone wall and down onto rocky ledges to scatter Dunhams ashes.
Obama earlier this year left flowers at the same cliffs, in memory of his mother
Good. That he hadn’t bothered me.
Konrad Ng? a fine Amerkun name
This guy is a fake.
All dutifully recorded by the MSM no doubt. I’ll bet the Kennedy’s are getting jealous!
Konrad Ng is a Canadian of Malaysian descent. He hails from the liberal strong hold of Burlington Ontario. His parents immigrated to Canada before he was born.
Makes complete sense to me.
I was just kidding anyhow. America is the greatest melting pot ever.
Konrad Ng is just a very odd name
Why doesn't this surprise me?
As churches go, this is kind of like a Miller Lite commercial from 1977; compared to Trinity United, less offensive, more kooky.
I never read about him attending her funeral, so I guess this was it.
Beats any Muzzie name any day of the week.
And later in August, an urn with some shredded paper graced the cliffs...
Unitarians are the church of “the bible bothers me”
Must have been an idea of his parents to give him a differently spelled name. The last name is pronounced ing.
Interest “ing”
LOL oddly enough his mother’s name is Joan.
I had hoped to get to Bali one day. Had a family member that lived there he loved it.
I don’t know why everyone made such a big deal about this. Relatives of cremated loved ones frequently wait to hold services until a later date when more family members and friends can attend.
This happens a lot in Hawaii because it’s so far away from everywhere. It takes a while for people to coordinate a long trip from the mainland or from Asia to attend a service.
You are full of interesting facts.
