U.S. Military Preparing for Domestic Disturbances

Tuesday, December 23, 2008 1:14 PM

By: Jim Meyers

A new report from the U.S. Army War College discusses the use of American troops to quell civil unrest brought about by a worsening economic crisis.

The report from the War College’s Strategic Studies Institute warns that the U.S. military must prepare for a “violent, strategic dislocation inside the United States” that could be provoked by “unforeseen economic collapse” or “loss of functioning political and legal order.”

Entitled “Known Unknowns: Unconventional ‘Strategic Shocks’ in Defense Strategy Development,” the report was produced by Nathan Freier, a recently retired Army lieutenant colonel who is a professor at the college — the Army’s main training institute for prospective senior officers.

You better have a good plan that includes figuring out what to do when your home is shot full of tear gas.

don’t be a sitting duck, get out. Don’t assume that everyone is unprepared and will sit there and wait. A friend of ours has an underground bomb shelter built back during the Cuban Crisis. Holds 30 comfortably, 50 for 24 hours.

140,000 men in Iraq to stablize a nation of 17mil. Saddam made sure most didn't have weapons.

Quite the opposite. They had so many and they were so well dispersed that even the US military authorities pretty had to allow them to keep at least the light stuff, like AK-47s for selft defense against the real crazies from outside the country.

One AK allowed per head of household. Sorta like Switzerland. Meanwhile Saddam and the Republican Guard left large caches of heavier weapons, explosives, etc all over the place.

Posse Comitatus, anyone?

It's mere law, Congress could repeal it on Jan, 19th, for Obama's signature on the afternoon of the 20th. Or to be safe, they could pass it he afernoon of the 20th, for signature the morning of the 21st.

FReeks are assuming JBT are at the door.

Isn't that what the folks over at DU call us?

I dunno to be honest - never been to DU - heard it was the equivalent of a toxic waste dump, thought - why waste my bandwidth?

Lots of folks jumping to (even for FR) wild conjectures.

I hate to see that, the site usually has a lot of reasoned discusstion with just enough sillyness (Thailand?) to keep it from being too depressing..... I have met a lot of nice folks here as well.

It appears that "constitutionalists" and rabble-rousing "journalists" have forgotten much older provisions in our Constitution (see "insurrections" and "insurrection").

Such as:

The Congress shall have Power ... To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

Amendment XIV
Section. 3. No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

Section. 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

..........

Those are the only places where "insurrection" or "insurrections is used in the Constitution , inlcuding mendments.

You haven’t read many of my posts, have you.

For shame, name calling this time of year.

I am a Vet, just like Dad, Uncle, Grandpa and my son. My family has put in our blood, sweat and tears - and I’ll have my own opinion, thank you very much.

Just as you are welcome to have your own opinion - and you’re welcome.

FWIW, my dad did share with me one little thing he learned from fighting for years in the PTO - “Never argue with a man carrying a loaded machine gun”. Dunno, has always worked for me.

BTW - Merry Christmas. Hope you are able to enjoy some time with family and friends.

I read PJ Comix's DUmmy Funnies thread. That tells us all we need to know.

I've noticed over the past year or so, we've had an increase in drama queens.

That being said, I don't think it's a bad idea to be prepared in case Dear Leader and his thugs want to try to further erode our liberties. I don't put anything past a leftist.

Hey Dude, you chill if you want to. Any rioters in the inner city should be shot. If that response is initiated quickly you will see the shortest riot in inner city riot history.

However, there is no reason for the creation of a seperate, standing army to address unrest inside of the United States. You are probably in for a rude awakening. I don’t put anything past Obama or this government.

Read the report itself, people, and chill out. NewsMax and other nut rags are exaggerating and trying to foment panic with their out-of-context paraphrasing of the report.

“You better have a good plan that includes figuring out what to do when your home is shot full of tear gas.”

I’m under no delusions about withstanding the might of the US military with the firearms I have. I’ve been there and seen it, and I won’t risk the lives of my family for a futile fight, but I will do what I whatever I can. I have several years worth of food stored, plenty of ammo, enough energy to get by for years and a lifetime of experience surviving in the wilderness if it comes to that. How about you?

How true

Step one - Keep current copy of nautical almanac
Step two - Keep current copies of Cook Island and Marquesses Island groups charts.
Step three - Keep passport and visas current
Step four - know where to find a good sailboat, about 35 to 45 (cutter rigged) with fresh water maker on board - within a 2 hour drive.

Step 5 - Mix. Add some long term storage provisions and you get to see how good the reef fishing is this time of year.

Got your zombie plan?

Man, I know it.

When I had a gig in Russia (Komi Republic) everyone had a medivac contract with a pre-cleared Swede outfit. If it looked like Zombie time, we were going to evac that a way.

Everyone else kept aeronautical maps (the only kind legal to us at the time) to at least get to the Barents Sea. Good luck FRiend.

A Ret Light Col writes a piece at the Army War COllege. FReeks are assuming JBT are at the door. Duuuudes, chill. It is a big leap to get from one to the other.

Maybe, but it seems like ever since the election, mentions of this sort of thing are popping up much more frequently, rumors of national emergencies and mass civil unrest. Hearing someone in the army talking about setting the Constitution aside and preparing for martial law under Obama is unsettling to say the least.

I understand that they're talking about this as a worst-case scenario, but just the fact that they're talking about it at all - I don't know, but I feel like I'd be irresponsible to just blow it off and not start taking steps to protect my girls. I've never shot a gun, but something just seems a bit off about everything lately, and it seems like a good time to learn how to. I'm willing to keep an open mind, and at first I was just happy that we weren't going to have a President Hillary, but I don't want to get caught with my pants down.
