Kennedy Declines to Make Financial Disclosure
NY Times ^ | December 22, 2008 | DAVID M. HALBFINGER

Posted on 12/22/2008 6:46:50 PM PST by Joiseydude

If she were applying to be, say, an undersecretary of education in Barack Obama’s new administration, Caroline Kennedy would have to fill out a 63-item confidential questionnaire disclosing potentially embarrassing text messages and diary entries, the immigration status of her household staff, even copies of every résumé she used in the last 10 years.

If she were running for election to the Senate, Ms. Kennedy would have to file a 10-part, publicly available report disclosing her financial assets, credit card debts, mortgages, book deals and the sources of any payments greater than $5,000 in the last three years.

But Ms. Kennedy, who has asked Gov. David A. Paterson to appoint her to succeed Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton — and who helped oversee the vetting process for Mr. Obama’s possible running mates — is declining to provide a variety of basic data, including companies she has a stake in and whether she has ever been charged with a crime.

Stick a fork in her. Anything’s possible, but I do not see how Patterson can justify appointing Caroline Kennedy a Senator if she won’t disclose her financial info, etc. It’s become either required or expected that people seeking public office disclose everything about their lives. I’d like to hear the Dems and the MSM justify making CK now.

We dare not question our leaders. Wave her through — the seat is hers.

We are not allowed to ask questions to politicians anymore, just ask Joe the Plumber, look what happened to him when he asked a simple question

A few decades ago William F. Buckley said he would rather be ruled by 100 people randomly chosen from the telephone directory than by 100 people chosen from the faculty of Harvard. That sounds a lot like a lottery which (with Bleepgate) set me to thinking about what Governor Patterson might consider.

He apparently does not want to pick Andrew Cuomo because his knows Cuomo wants to be governor. If he picks anyone else, he is afraid that Cuomo might knock him off in a primary and there is no guarantee Cuomo won't knock him off in a primary from a two-year stint in the Senate. Even the Kennedy name might not save him with all the financial problems New York is experiencing.

The reason Blagojevich is in trouble is because he allegedly tried to sell the senate seat for direct personal gain. The key for Patterson is to dispose of the seat for no personal gain. How? Simple, raffle it off at $50 a ticket to anyone who wants to purchase a ticket. After all, in New York a senator need only be a resident of the state when elected or appointed. I suspect New York state could easily sell 10 million tickets to close the budget gap by half a billion.

It's not that she "won't disclose"--it's that there isn't enough time to list her financial holdings before the appointment. Can you imagine what she is worth?

What is her marital status? I hear no mention of her husband and she seems to have dropped his name.

Frau Schlossberg doesn’t need to present you with anything, Proles. Accept your betters, and resume your work.

Financial info has to be released. Even Slick Willie released the list of library donors.

This woman has a hereditary claim to the House of Lords, through her Father, the late King, Nailed-anything-that-moved and her uncle, Sir Osis of Liver.

Normally, you would be right. But we have seen way too often that hte rules do not apply to Democrats. In the end, they would turn it around and argue that the only citizens interested are busybodies and hate mongers. If the press is uninterested in how Obama raised nearly $800 million(!), or why and how Fannie and Freddie paid protection money to Democrats in Congress, why would they care if CKS (or any other Democrat, really) holds investments or has business/political relationships posing a conflict? Why report that when they can prove Sarah Palin once made out in high school?

It would be easy for Caroline Kennedy to release her last few tax returns as a start. She doesn’t want this info out there unless she’s safely in the Senate because her vast wealth will undercut this she’s-just-a-regular-gal persona.
